Local guitarist Stephen Zurakowsky will perform this evening at the Waterloo Stage Theatre in celebration of the recent release of his CD Big City Quiet Moments, a compilaâ€" tion of 10 original guitar comâ€" positions. Wuaterloo guitarist / composer releases new CD Zurakowsky, a composer, performer, teacher, poet and stayâ€"atâ€"home dad, owns and operates his own guitar acadâ€" emy in uptown Waterloo. His introduction to the guiâ€" tar was in rock ‘n‘ roll, but he soon became immersed in clasâ€" sical study and entered the University of Toronto music program in 1987, where he enjoyed improvising jazz and blues between serious bouts of Bach practice. It‘s there that he met if greatest influenceâ€"Phil Nimmons. "To me his whole personality embodied life and his whole being shook with musical intensity," Zurakowsky says. "I feel he taught me so much about music that 1 am still tryâ€" o PÂ¥ H A M P TO N | ing to take it all in." Under Nimmons tutelage, Zurakowsky obtained a fourthâ€" year scholarship for his excelâ€" lence in jazz arranging and his studies in music education. 1992 saw Zurakowsky enterâ€" ing teachers college, and it was several years before he began playing guitar again. He credits his return to playing to guitar to his high school students. "They actually thought l was good. Their mouths would drop when they would hear me switch styles from classical to their favourite songs," Zurakowsky says. "This is where my composing began. 1 was developing my own style and the students found my composition appealing. 1 had won over a very tough audiâ€" ence." Unable to secure a fullâ€"time teaching contract in the early ‘90s, Zurakowsky took the risk to open his own guitar acadâ€" emy in Waterloo. The music is postâ€" impressionistic with hints of minimalist phrasing and the guitar creates textures that at times sound like a harp. "Maybe it was my rock backâ€" ground, but I was never comâ€" fortable in straight classical setâ€" ting in that 1 never felt a true connection with my audience," he says. "In playing my own composition, 1 now feel that connection and 1 am enjoying that 1 am opening up the clasâ€" sical guitar to a whole new audience." Zurakowsky will perform tonight (Feb. 16) at 8 p.m. at the Waterloo Stage Theatre. Admission is $10. A reception will follow the performance.
