From that point forward, Fischer and his mother researched the illness. "She Canadian Publications Mail Sales Product Agreement #136379 Published every Wednesday by The Fairway Group A division of Southam Inc November 17, 1999 WATERLOO CHRONICLE became a doctor of sorts," he sad. And it wasn‘t only his mother providing the support he needed to overcome all odds against him. "It‘s the support from those around you that gets you through something like this," Fischer explained. "I believe a person‘s immune system goes with their personality. So supâ€" (Continued from page 3) port provided by your family and friends 1s so important." A number of WCI staff members also suited up to help Fischer fight his battle "I‘ll never forget my Grade 10 history teacher who alsu coached the basketball team, he said. "I wanted to play basâ€" ketball, and he knew that, but then 1 got sick. One day 1 was walking home with some friends and saw my teacher putting up a new basketball net for me in my duveway." In Fischer‘s opinion, the lines of support from those who were seen as only teachers by his peers helped turn proâ€" fessional relationships into longâ€"lasting friendships And now years, and many operations, later the fighter is in remission and feeling better than ever. "I think that‘s what gave me the edge for the scholarship.‘ Fischer said, "They were lookâ€" ing for someone who never gave up through the battle Someone who had a positive attitude, kind of like the glass being half full instead of half empty." With the belief that this atuâ€" tude pulled him through the most traumatic time of his life, Fischer said he is more than ready to jump head first into life again. "After this, you find you place a greater value on your friends and family," he said "You don‘t appreciate someâ€" thing until you lose it. For me it was things like being active. having energy, feeling hungrs and especially having my hair back." For those suffering from a similar situation, Fischer advised, "Keep looking up and always be positive, no matier how bleak it looks. It‘s that kind of attitude that can get you through it."
