WATERLOO CHRONICLE Four local accounting firms helped kick off the Chamber of Commerce‘s latest doctor recruiting campaign with a $20,000 donation Monday. Presenters were John Reid of KPMG (far left), Tim Leonard of Deloitte & Touche, Doug Montgomery of Ernst & Young and Bryan Stewart of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Bob Â¥rbanac photo have such a problem attracting _ that need, and get behind the _ attention to the problem and keeping family doctors cause, hopefully we can recruit The hope is that increased That‘s why he joined the campaign. "It really shouldn‘t be that way," he said. "I don‘t think people really want it to stay that way. Once they recognize that need, and get behind the cause, hopefully we can recruit some more doctors to this area The chamber is hoping to raise more than $600,000 over three years to fund the ambiâ€" tious marketing and advertisâ€" ing campaign to bring more doctors to the area. In addition to hosting continued weekend visits to the area by family practice residents, the chamber also wants to launch a national advertising campaign in major Canadian publications to draw The hope is that increased awareness of the problem, along with a greater awareness of what Kâ€"W has to offer, will bring more doctors in. Local financial institutions have joined the campaign and a donation can be made at any bank, trust company or credit union in the Kitchenerâ€"Waterâ€" loo area in the month of July. People who donate more than $10 will receive a tax receipt. The local business commuâ€" nity has already raised $130,000 for the recruitment campaign, with another $20,000 coming Monday from the accounting firms of KPMG, Ernst & Young, PriceWaterâ€" houseCoopers, and Deloitte & Touche. Glen Mathers, chair of the chamber‘s task force, said the money will strictly go to the planned marketing and adverâ€" tising campaign for new docâ€" tors. Not one dime will go to an incentive bonus program to attract doctors to Kâ€"W. "None of this money goes to doctors," said Mathers. "We‘re not offering cash incentives unlike other towns that are offering as much as $50,000." Mathers said Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo doesn‘t want to get into "bidding wars" with other communities. That might attract the wrong type of recruit "We don‘t want anybody to come here for the wrong reaâ€" sons," he said. "We want them to come here because it‘s a good place to practice and a good place to live. "We don‘t want them to come here and after a few years. when the money runs out and the contract expires. go off to another town. We‘d have to find a replacement all over again." What do * you think? The local Chamber of Comâ€" merce has heated up its camâ€" paign to attract family physicians to the area and is looking for support from the community. Will the chamâ€" ters efforts pay off.
