Brian Dealer of the city's parks services department and Terry Slam. of the citfs devel, opment services department said last week the city and Heathshore Homes Ltd. of Guelph are proposing a land Tim Gardncr Chianti! Stqif swap to allow a 30house sub division to be built on a vacant eight-acre piece of property located east of Beechlawn Drive and west of Old Post The proposed land swap would see the city hand over approximately [fl acre of land at the north end of nearby Old Post Park to Heathshore Homes while the developer would hand over approxi- mately 1/2 acre of land located at the north end ofthe property to the city. The land swap would enhance a green space at the north end of the property that currently allows local resi- dents to walk between Beech- lawn Drive and Old Post Road and helps link two nearby neighbourhood athletic facili- ties. The city held an informal public meeting concerning the property this past December, In that time, Paul laiimer of Bridle Path Court and one or two other nearby residents asked if the proposed develop- ment could be moved south into pan of Old Post Park so that the enhanced green space link could be provided at the north end of the property. Dealer said city oTrciahs and representatives with Heathshore Homes met after the December meeting and decided that the residents' sug- gestion was a good one. In fact Heathshore representative, Carol Wiebe, said last week although Heathshore had to go through a fair amount of work and expense lo tect/ure the proposed subdivision, com- pany officials believe the new proposal is sound, "ht our analysis, the; IS a win/win," Wiebe sod, "Heathshore is still able to achieve its building program. As well, Detzler sand although the subdivision will be moving into part of an established city park, the city will not actually lose anything by agreeing to the proposal. "The Clly won't be losing trees on the properly that tt's swapping with the developer," Detzler said. "And in fact the city will gain ownership ofa couple of trees on the devel- oper's property." Dealer also said he believed the proposed changes at Old Post Park were coming at a good time because the city has money in its 1999 capital bud- get to replace playground equipment at the park this fall. In fact city officials want at least one representative from three nearby neighbourhood associations, the Beechwood- Bridlegate Homes Association, the Beechwood North Homes Association and the Beech- wood II Homes Association, to help them select the new play- ground equipment for the park. Traditionally, the city has treated Old Post Park as a low priority neighbourhood park, Detzler said.
