\\\\ C DEALING WITH GRUB INFESTATION IN YOUR PROPERTY & BOULEVARD * Residents of Waterloo are responsible for the maintenance of boulevard areas adjacent to their properties. This includes not only caring for and cutâ€" ting these turf areas but also the repair of turf damage that can occur as well. Areas maintained by the City of Waterloo that have been damaged by grubs are being topdressed and overseeded by Park Services staff. This work was started in November of 1998 until freeze up. This work was reâ€"initiated this April 1999. It is the intent to have most of these damaged areas topâ€" dressed and overseeded by the end of May 1999. This also coincides with the appropriate germination window for the seed. It is already evident at this time that the seeded areas are germinating. However it does take time. So what can you do now at this time of year to repair the grub damage on your turf area? The following is a general approach to dealing with grub damage now: * Rake the dead grass from the grub damaged areas and compost this dead * Aerify your entire turf area, preferably with a core removal system * Topdress with compost/sifted soil or a mixture of both, paying special attention to the severely damaged areas. Never put topdressing material deeper than 1/4" on healthy living grass ares. Damaged areas may require a deeper application. * Seed at a rate of 7lbs. of grass seed per 1,000 square feet. Lightly rake in the seed to ensure soil seed contact for effective germination. Purchase a drought tolerant/wear tolerant seed requiring lower applications of fertilâ€" izer unless you are willing to provide higher care. Match your seed choice to your turf care abilities. * Apply a fertilizer intended for root development. Something with a higher content of phosphorus. * Keep seeded areas moist but not drenched * Germination should take place in 10â€"20 days at this time of year. * Keep a healthier lawn year round by regularly aerifying (3â€"4 times per season); cutting it when it grows to 1/3 past its desired length which should be about 3". So cut it when it grows to 4 1/4". Discussion and debate have been taking place throughout the Region of Waterloo around restructuring, amalgamation and reform of local government since 1994. Waterloo City Council will be discussing the future of Waterloo at its meeting on Monday, May 31, 1999.
