Festival builds a neSst PP (Continued from Page 1) The biggest difficulty in attracting some of the more coveted acts is cost. Since the Carnival is a nonâ€"profit event that stays afloat with the generâ€" ous support of the Uptown Business Improveâ€" ment Area (B.1.A), private businesses and help from the City of Waterloo, the Carnivals volunâ€" teer committee can‘t afford all the acts they want. Thats why the Festival of Fools is a potential centrepiece in any further festival expansion. The Festival‘s fundraising will provide them with a nest egg for next year and allow them to do a ht tle more longâ€"range planning for an event budâ€" geted at more than $75,000 a year. "We‘ve been fiscally responsible and have done well over 10 years," said Johnstonâ€"Aldworth. "But in order to maintain and build on the qual ity of the buskers, we needed to start a nest egg, some account that would finance special things." Waterloo Regional Crime Stoppers would like local aviaâ€" tion enthusiasts and farmers to take part in a joint venture to eradicate manijuana plants from area fields. The only winner in the proposed plan is the public. They‘ve warmly accepted the zaniness Crime Stoppers formally announced the beginning of ‘Operation Pot Spot‘ last week (midâ€"August) in an effort to spot marijuana being grown in area comn fields and along field edges in woods and along stream and river banks. Spotting pot A recent Crime Stoppers news release said some people try to grow marijuana plants in the middle of local corn fields and along the edges of fields often without the consent of the local landowner. They then try to harvest their "illegal" crop in mid to late September, before local landowners start harvesting their regular corn crop. The marijuana plants must be harvested at that time or they soon would grow taller than the comn and becomne easâ€" ily visible. "‘Operation Pot Spot‘ pamâ€" phlets will be prominently placed at the local airport as part of the special program, because marijuana plants can be easily spotted from the air. www simpiyfinewines com START A aicH Now! "Acts that are just so bizarre that nobody would believe, but they have to keep delivering more to be financed." Ulumately it would help build on the wonderâ€" ful reputation that the local Camival has on the wider international busker circuit. It would be something to keep Waterloo on the map. "Waterloo© has an extremely good reputation," said Johnstonâ€"Aldworth. "Through their commuâ€" nity, the busker community, they talk to each other at all these shows and we‘re very well respected. They feel they‘re treated very well and that the local audience is very generous.
