A bassâ€"baritone who has been heard around the world is traveling full circle to teach where his potential was first recognized and nurtured. Juno nominee Damiel Lichu is adding his vorce to WLU‘s vocal program Lichti, who studied music at WLU from 1969 to 1972, has been appointed to the Faculty of Music by WLU‘s board af governors. In September, he will join David Falk and oneâ€" time mentor Victor Martens in leading the university‘s voice program The New Hamburg nauve made his operatic debut at the Stratford Festival in 1974, and has since appeared with major symphonic, choral and conâ€" cert organizations in Canada, the U.S., South America and Europe. He is currently perâ€" forming in Rome with the Rome Opera. Most of Lichti‘s performance career has focused on oratori0, concert and recital repertoire. But hardly a season has gone by without him performing either a concert opera or a fully staged opera. He has partnered with such internationally renowned conductors and musicians as Helmuth Rilling, Christopher _ Hogwood, Bernard Greenhouse, Janina Fialkowska and Maureen Forâ€" rester. "He is just a wonderful singer," says Anne Hall, dean of WLU‘s Faculty of Music "Out of a truly amazing list of candidates, we chose Daniel because of the caliber of his singing, his international repuâ€" tation and his commitment to teaching." Lichti to join WLU vocal program Over the course of his career, Lichti has provided priâ€" vate lessons and taught masâ€" terclasses for groups of eight to 20 students at Conrad Grebel College, the University of Guelph, and the University of British Columbia, At WLU, he will help lead a voice program involving 70 students. Local singetr/songwriter Mary Anne Epp is resurrecting her Bluebird Night Showcase Series, Sunday evenings at Williams Coffee Pub throughâ€" out July and August. Bluebird Night is a regional songwriter showcase featuring singer/songwriters and groups in Waterloo Regional.
