WCI orchestra takes gold medal at U.S. competition The Waterloo collegiate institute Senior String Orchestra, conâ€" ducted by Yasu Shibata, received a firstâ€"place gold medal and troâ€" phy at the annual Chicago Music Festival, held earlier this month. The orchestra, comprised of 61 string musicians, competed in a field of 22 competitors from Canada and the U.S., and earned a total mark of 93 out of 100. The orchestra generally competes every second year, and this is the third gold medal won by the group in international competitions. They have also won four silver medals since they began comâ€" peting over 12 years ago. In 1994, the orchestra was chosen to perform for the Canadian Music Educators Association National Conference at Wilfrid Laurier University, and in 1995 were preâ€" sented with the Catherine Allison Award by the Canadian Music Educators Association as one of the best high school ensembles in Canada.
