At the last meeung of the Health Care Forum for Fair Share held in Cambndge on Feb 12. there was a question raised as to the Oscar winning movie that chromcled the battle tor home rule in Scotland, by a fed up group of citizens, led by one of their own I pointed out that there could be no "bravehean because it is toc late in the battle. Instead the best we vould hope for was a "Robert the Bruce", the reluctant heir apparent, who should have been the one to stand up for Scotland After thinking about this aspect of "Braveheat _ 1 think I was both right and wrong. Right because there was no one at the meetâ€" ing worthy of the title, unless Ann Wein was there â€" she was "Braveheart". Ann, the clerk from St Mary‘s, who after the announcement that St. Mary‘s site would close as acute care, took up the cause of saving a fine institution. Yet when the Health Restructuring Commussion came to town, she was not even allowed to present the SOS position. Some democracy, eh? In search of Braveheart Well Ann, 1 thank you for being our Bravehean, you deserve honours from both your hospital and the region and you will not be forgotten by the community. What about naming something after her? It should be something that is recognized for standing your ground and showing leadership. Maybe she could teach some lessons to those that still show reluctance to take on larger governments. But what is needed now, is someone with the politâ€" LETTE R S hes THE BEST THE BEST oOUTERWEAR THE BEST o s SAVINGS NOW: CLOTHES a e o King at University in Waterloo 746â€"2067 Open 7 Days _Quest Where do you want your Quest to take you"? clothing & outerwear MEXX, KENNE NAUTIC TOMMY MORE ical clout to represent our Region and the strong will to do it This is because, what needs to happen in my eyes. is for the Regional Chair Ken Seiling to take on the responsibility and accountabiluy in putting poliuical muscle into our requests for improved health care. He is the only polctan that can say that he has a regronal base of support, as he represents 436 000 people and is not new to the job. He has been there through the years of underfunding and. 1 think, should have stepped in more promiâ€" nently to unite the scattered three cities and four rural areas that make up our Region years ago. But it is not too late yet Like the reluctant Bruce, he could yet emerge as the one who vould unite the voice of the region. Of course other egos may be hurt, but that is where his support by the people could be the key to his success. I‘m sure it will be a mass "I did it" by more than a few levels of pohucians when we get an MR1, cardiac or cancer cventre, but health care is far more than these upgrades. Frankly, politicians are great at taking credit but bad at taking the blame, but based on track record, they deserve more of the latter than the former. They can first start to correct this by honouring Ann Wein publicly and then they can tell the government that we will not accept just scraps, but real funding, or else there will be a tax revolt. Since we generate more than $15.8 billion into the econâ€" omy of Canada, it would not be taken lightly.
