She lead the Canadian 4X200m freestyle relay team to a fourthâ€"place finish at the World Championships in Perth. Jan. 17, and followed that up with two third place finishes at a World Cup event in Sydney last weekend. ROW head coach Dean Boles said it was all part of a strategy for preparing Nicholls for a return to Sydney in time for the 2000 games. "I felt that it was important. The Waterloo Ringette Associations 21st annual Winterfest tournament saw Waterâ€" loo teams skate away with two silvers , and three bronze medals in weekend action around the city. Waterloo won silver in the Junior diviâ€" sion after a tight 5â€"4 loss to Whitby in the gold medal final. Waterloo beat Montreal The Waterloo Intermediate team also won silver in the Intermediate division after falling to the Montreal Deb team 6â€"4 in the final. 6â€"3 in the semiâ€"finals to make it to the finals. The Petite "A" Waterloo Wildcats, feaâ€" tured as the Chronicles team of the week last week, finished third in the Petite diviâ€" sion of the tournament. Erin Collins, Christina Balch, Suzanne Wilson, Casey McCreary, Lisa Barber, and Heather Pietrobon all scored goals in the tourney. The were supported by strong play from goalies Candice Weber and Pietrobon. They also received strong performances from Krystle Beatson, Jennifer Kreller, Stephanie Mesich, and Kelly Hergott Waterloo also won medals in the Belle and Interm ediate division Waterloo wins two silvers at Winterfest SPORTS Bob Vrbanac Chronicle Staff while she was there, to swim in the Olympic pool," he said. "It was good physical and mental preparation "It bodes well for her as a person because she can visualâ€" ize what she‘ll be doing in Sepâ€" tember of 2000‘ The implicatons of her outâ€" standing results weren‘t lost on Nicholls. She knew she made a statement to the National team‘s coaches with her strong performances at the two events. Nicholls swam a total of nine different races. and was close to breaking a number of Canaâ€" dian records, along with a number of personal bests. "They didn‘t want me to swim that many events." she said. "They were reluctant to let me do it. "But 1 kept my end of the meet up, and they were surâ€" prised that I could hold myself together." Flirting with all those Canaâ€" dian records and personal bests is also an indication that Sudbury and Forest jostle in the corner of Petite final at Albert West, Sunday Nicholls is ready to rise to the next level. She‘s ready to estabâ€" lishing her dominance in the pool. "Now I know 1 can be faster," she said. "I‘m satisfied with my swims. but I‘m not happy with my results." "Her belief in her is starting to catch up with my belief in her." he said. "She‘s starting to get it. She was as good as anyâ€" body else in the world there." Boles thinks her confidence is blossoming at the right time. Nicholls agreed that the two Australian events were the place to make a statement "I‘d say it was a good experiâ€" Laura Nicholls ence," she said "It was good that you can get up, and stand up agains: the competition "I‘ll recognize the different people | swam against, and they‘ll recognize me." tt‘s not the only recognition that she‘s getting said Boles Nicholls is being mentioned in the same breath as national swimmers _ like Marion Limpert, who medalled at the last Olympic games. "People are starting to notice her," he said. "They‘re starting to recognize her as one of the best in the country." Nicholls returned to her regâ€" ular practice routine with ROW vesterday. She‘s preparing for the upcoming Canadian Natuonals, and is looking forward to the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lampur this summer Nicholls\ experience should be good preparation said Boles "The key thing is you have ask how are you doing," he said. "You have to remember to keep everything on preparation."
