& Violinist Shari Ulrich returning to Waterloo & Shari Ulrich has fashioned an extraordinarily varied career for herself since coming north from her native S&in Ratael, California to British Columbia in the earty "70s. A Juno award winner, she has excelled as a singer, songwriter, multiâ€"instrumentalist, televiâ€" sion host, theme composer, script writer, and, most recently, theatre performer. Ulrich, who returns to Waterioo Aug. 20 for a concert at the Princess Cinema, is as busy with her music as ever, all the while juggling responsiâ€" bilities as the mother of a sixâ€"yearâ€"old daughter and a board member of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Pacific Music industry Association, and the Songwriter‘s Assoâ€" ciation of Canada. It‘s an earlier, more wistful image of Ujrich, however, that lingers for many of her tans. Picture a singing, smiling, bare foot young woman in a flowing print skirt and flouncy peas ant blouse, a fiddle in one hand and waves of hair blowing in a summer breeze. That was the Shari Ulrich who first appeared on Vancouver stages in 1973 after stints of backpacking around the U.S., performing with her older brother and living on 8.C.‘s Sunshine Coast. With Rick Scott and Joe Mock, Ulrich had formed the singular and quirky Pied Pumkin String Ensemble, a hit at Simon Fraser University and any festival, park or beach where a crowd was sure to gather. Soon, however, events would conspire to launch Ulrich into a much larger scene. She was hired to tour with West Coast folk artist Valdy as part of his backing group the Hometown Band. in addition to singing harmony and playing everything from flute to sax and violin behind Valdy, Uirich was called on every show to step fos sing Joe Mock‘s stunning Flying. Not surprisingly, Hometown Band was directly offered a domestic record deal and two albums resulted â€" Flying an Hometown Band â€" the latter winning a Juno an the best new group. When the band broke up, Ufrich began her sol releasing Long Night on A&M, which won a Junc tion for most promising new female artist. But it until the followâ€"up One Step Ahead release that named the Juno award winner for most promisit artist in 1981. That persuaded MCA to sign Ulrict international record deal and, with longâ€"time pr: and collaborator Claire Lawrence, she released h acclaimed Talk Around Town. She would go on to coâ€"host, with David Suzuk ‘Juno winning sound Master Lee‘s show combines comeâ€" dy and martial arts with a healthy dose of audience participation. it‘s a combiâ€" nation that leaves onlookers spellâ€" bound and in stitches!
