The strategy has been developed over the past year with input from the BIA, city staff, council and the Waterloo economic development committee. In a presentation to council, the city‘s director of development services Greg Romanick, who was also a member of the uptown marketing strategy team, said although the city‘s uptown is curâ€" rently in fairly good shape, it is facing increased competition from wmndmuuubhwmm’fi stores. As a result, the BIA and the city have worked out a marketing strategy for the city‘s core that is made up of three components, Romanick said. First of all, the city and the BIA plan to improve their base of marketing information. One way the city and the BIA intend to do that is by conducting a customer profile survey to see just who the uptown‘s customers are, where they come from and what they want in the uptown area. Romanick said he expected that survey would begin by midâ€" March and would likely be completed by the end of June. The second component in the uptown miarketing strategy is to improve communications between the city and between BIA members themselves. And the third component in the strategy is to use background information gathered from the various surveys to actually have people go out and try to lure specific types of businesses into the WHERE CAN YOU FIND AN OUTHOUSE, RABBITS, EGGS, CFLL PHONES, DINOSAURS, COWS, PIGS, HANDCUFFS, ROSES, COMPUTERS, TURTLES, CREDIT CARDS OR FEET. The city is contributing $8,900 to the program plus some stafl time In a recent interview, BIA board member and Waterloo Coun Tricia Siemens, who was also a member of the uptown marketing strategy team, said it is important for all Waterioo residents to be concerned with the health of Waterloo‘s uptown "There are a lot of cities, like Detroit for example , that are empty on the inside," Siemens said. *And that kind of disease fikers to the outside. So it behooves every resident in Waterioo to be conâ€" cerned about the health of the uptown." The city, the BIA and the Toronto Dominion Bank will also be working to implement a facade improvement program for the uptown in 1997.
