: John Cale‘s best in y gence Lou Reed may have been the Velvet Underground‘s pivotal figâ€" ure but it was the classically trained Cale who gave the band its paipable intensity, cold dementia and avantâ€"garde edge. His quarterâ€"century solo career since leaving VU has been nothing short of brilliant. Over the course of 20 or so solo albums and collaborations with the likes of Reed and Brian Eno, Cale has covered every piece of ground imaginable, from dark, unsettling rock and roll to moody art rock and tuneful pop. He leans more toward the latter on Walking On Locusts, which recalls the gentle approach of his 1973 masterpiece, Paris 1919, and at times, has the tropical flavor of 1985‘s Artificial Intelliâ€" repetition to new l rvesiih! extremes. He builds 4 lengthy, distortionâ€" heavy riff workouts that move at a snail‘s pace, go nowhere in particular, then grind slowly to a hait. Occasionally he catches us off guard by tossing in an acoustic guitar or an ambient keyboard piece but for the most part, Penâ€" tastar is loud, lumbering, throbbing guitar rock that, needless to say, isn‘t for the closeâ€"minded or fainthearted.
