For GM fans, the choice between Pontrac and Chevrolet has not been easy. Okay, I‘ll tip my hand on this issue by sayâ€" ing there have been a couple of Camaros in my garage over the years. Pontiac‘s traditionally flamboyant styling has been just a hittle too gimmicky for me. The current Camaro/Fireâ€" bird platform has not changed my allegiance. More proâ€" nounced overhangs, a large prominent rear spotler, large exhaust openings in the rear bumper and a bubbleâ€"like appearance to the front and rear lacias make the Firebird appear heavier and less athletic than the lean Camaro. But I do not profess to be a marketing expert. My test car, a metallic silver *Ram Air" Trans Am, drew more admiring stares and comments from people than any other car that 1 have ever driven. And while 1 like the look of the car, 1 was shocked by the number of people who absolutely love it. people hate GMs. 1 will personâ€" ally take the pohtically correct road and say that 1 sit on the fence on this one. The Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ponuac Firebird have been pitâ€" ted against each other year alter year by every major autoâ€" motive publication. Now 1 have always felt that you are either a GM or a Ford person. No middle ground here. GM people hate Fords and Ford transmission and the potent power of GM‘s LT1 small block put the new "F cars" in terriâ€" tory normally reserved for the magnificent Corvette. Compare this to the Mustang GT‘s 215 hp and no wonder Ford lost no ume in coming back to the batâ€" tlefield with the Cobra. The Ram Air is actually the WSâ€"6 Performance option which can be ordered with cither the Trans Am or the Firebird Formula. Pontiac‘s "Ram Air" Trans Am pumps out a whopping 305 hp and rides on massive P275/40ZRâ€" respectively, and have been tuned for even more power since their introduction. A standard 6â€"speed Borg Warner specs like 280 hp and 275 hp First, 1 have to say that the Genâ€" eral has nothing to apologize for with the base 728 and Trans Am. The new "F cars", as they are known, were totally redesigned for the ‘93 model year. Dollar for dollar, the Trans Am and 228 offer more heartâ€" stopping performance than anything else on the road. These cars, in their base forâ€" mals, post some impressive the Pony Car wars. The *Ram Air" Trans Am and the Camaro 228 SS are GM‘s response to Ford‘s Mustang GT Cobra. Suspension tweaking was another mandate of Pontiac engineers. The ride is someâ€" what stiffer than the base Trans Am‘s but 1 noticed that there is significantly less body roll in Gains in 0â€"100 kmvhr times are minimal but when operatâ€" ing at higher revs near cruisâ€" ing speeds, the Ram Air begins to shine. The car‘s engine roars, pulling all the way to redline in third, fourth and fifth gears and at 100 km/hr drops to an idling 1500 rpm when shifted into sixth. The Ram Air‘s hood scoop simply forces additional air into the intake which simply works better the faster you go. about half an hour down the road to a custom shop for the retrofit and then back to the plant for final inspection.
