This years tourney takes place June 13. Thompson, executive director of United Way of Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo and Area, has seen his fun event grow to approximately 80 competitors (all friends and acquaintances) annually The proâ€" ceeds will allow up to six Sports and Scholarship awards annually of $250 each for secondary students who have displayed a comâ€" mitment to academics combined with participation in extraâ€"curâ€" ricular activities during their secondary school years as well as a demonstrated commitment to community volunteerism. Up to four of the scholarships will be awarded annually to stuâ€" dents of Kâ€"W secondary schools planning to attend a recognized postâ€"secondary institution the following year and up to two more to students attending a Walkerion secondary school who are resâ€" idents of the village of Mildmay or the Township of Carrick. Thompson, a tireless volunteer outside of his United Way duties, sees the event as a winâ€"win method of giving back to the Kâ€"W community he currently resides in, and to the Mildmay area, where he grew up. "Its always been a desire of mine to give back t others, to see scholarships like this help someone directly in the community," said Thompson. "If we can help some students annually in Kâ€"W, thats great, and of course I‘ll always have a place in my heart for Mildmay, where 1 grew up." Students wishing to apply for scholarships can get forms at Kâ€" W secondary school guidance departments, the Waterloo Chronâ€" icle, or from Sports and Scholarships, 284 Whitmore Dr., Waterloo, Ont.
