â€"OPINON In your November 1 issue.Sandy Baird remarked that he was astonâ€" ished and excited "to see Canadians cranked up from sea to shining sea" durning the last few days before the Quebec referendum. He went on to say that on only one other occasion "have I seen the same spirâ€" it and it fashed only briefly. That was when Paul Henderson of Lucknow scored that goal against the Russians." Well | guess Sandy was out of the country when a young man named Terry Fox not only captivated his own nation but the entire world There wasn‘t a dry eye in my house when he had to end his rourney and be taken back home to British Columbia. There wasn‘t a dry eve in my house when an absolutely astonishing telethon raised more money than the Canadian Cancer Society could have ever dreamed that Terry would raise in his walk. And Terry‘s dream is suill reaching out to young Canadians encouraging them to stretch bevond their limits to new goals that others haven‘t even thought of And under the same heading of catching up on November‘s readâ€" ing. Sandy said in his November 8 column that we should not "forâ€" get the Remembrance Day observances on Saturday. In recent years, they haven‘ attracted nearly the attention they deserve." | would invite Sandy to attend a high school Remembrance Day program next year. Perhaps they don‘t all do it the same way but if Grand River Collegiates program is any indication, I have no concern that young people today are forgetting the sacrifices of their grandâ€" parents. 1 missed the program this year but the one in 1994 was one that cvery veteran should have witnessed. With up to 50 students on stage. the halfâ€"hour program was a veritable battleâ€"cry renouncing war Actual newsreel footage on a huge screen of bombing victims, battle victims. concentration camp victims and on and on appeared during a play about what our own country might be like if the Nazis had won the Second World War The program concluded with a monologue that nvalled the best of Churchills and you could have heard the proverbial pin drop in the audience of several hundred stuâ€" LETTER S dents If Sandv‘s only criteria for judging how this community remembers our fallen is the number of people who attend a public ceremony at the cenotaph, hes using the wrong yardstick. Many young people today dont really want to put up with a slowâ€"moving, traditional style of service or parade. Thats too boring. They want to do someâ€" thing thats powerful, that gets attention; thats "in your face". And you know what? 1 like their way better. On behall of the Waterloo Region Breast Health Network, I would like in thank the Waterloo Chronicle for its support in Breast Health Awareness Month: The article Deborah Crandall wrote was wellâ€"writâ€" ten and accurate. Deborah was professional and very easy to work with We had many phone calls and attendees at our events as a result of this article It is very difficult to make our large community aware of breast health. Articles like yours increase our efforts greatly. As we are a newly formed network of organizations and individuals with a comâ€" mitment to breast health in Waterloo Region, we hope that with a longer history, our efforts will be better organized next year. . w Mn remie ind aat ied nlifibncn id oi in aienennnientt 4 T Thanks again for your efforts to promote breast health and we look forward to working with you again next year 1y 0 armlco Chronicle Thanks for the help promotin Breast Health Awareness Mont Waterloo Town Square 75 King St. South, Suite 201 Waterloo, Ontario N2J 1P2 Telephone _ 886â€"2830 Fax No. 886â€"9383 Catching up with Sandy Waterloo Region Breast Health Network Editor: Melodee N artinuk Reporters: Pete Cudhea (Sports Editor) Deborah Crandall Tim Gardner _ Display Advertising: Maureen McNab Gerry Mattice John McVicar More comedy from Queen‘s Park Gosh, only 12 days until Christmas and so many things remain to be done. The visit? Well. lgcnod\enwkt(o&mcmugh.bunhemfl was most hospitable. 1 must confess that lately 1 have a thing about crowds. Mostly 1 avoid them. The Opposition MPPs have been fractious from the beginning and the Speaker, Allan McLean, has had n presence. . Stll, I think a fundamental change in procedure is needed.
