cial, third The echo of ‘Play Ball" will be heard reverberating from the ymnasium of Conestoga College as the boys of summer fine tune the sport of baseball during the winter months. Pro Baseball School of Waterloo isn‘t going to let a bit of snow and cold weather put the brakes on baseball as they offer a comprehensive winter conditioning program for players to refine and further their skills The fourrrva;r;tvh;-mgram. which began on Dec. 8, will be moved from the college to the new indoor training facility next month at Bechtel Park, which is in its final stages of construcâ€" tion According to J P Soucie, Director ol Pro Baseba‘l and a SCol! for the Clevcland Indians, last year the program attracted 96 players ranging from 8 to 34 years of age, a considerably higher amount than the 30 that he had first anticipated. This year the program will be limited to 30 kids in each of the two programs. 1 1 w Mn tss ie cb ho aatee, POF "The program is lignited to a smaller group atmosphere with a coaching rato of about eight to one. This way each individâ€" ual gets more personal attention "The time to play baseball is in the summer, but the time to learn the skills is during the winter," said Soucie, "Canadians are at an immediate disadvantage to their U.S. rivals because of playing and training opportunities. The two programs offered this year include a pitcher/catcher program and position and hitting program. The pitcher/catcher program is only one hour per week, while the position and hitting program is two hours a week. According to Soucie, there‘s also some homework involved as well. "The kids in the pitching and catching program have to go on a weight training program, go through mental, visualizaâ€" tion, stretching and focusing programs. They‘re also tested three times for fitness." The other program involves positional offense and defense play as well as hitting. Trevor Braiden, an outfielder and pitcher with the Kitchener Dodgers, and Mark Elliott, a minor baseball coach from Waterloo will be helping Soucie during the fourâ€"month program. Players have to be selfâ€"motivated and selfâ€"directed and preâ€" pare themselves mentally as well as physically. The program encourages the players to set development goals, using the winter time wisely for training. Each player receives an initial evaluation and then is reâ€"evaluated after every two months. "Mental training, which include visualization is not only great for baseball and sports, but it‘s also great for life skills. Part of the program deals with how players feel during comâ€" petition and how to control, or channel their anger " For more information on the program, call 740â€"1591 Age: Phone: president with Manulife Finanâ€" Thanks, Santa. se Clironiicle Voluntary Pay w r in‘ AQtit ' wï¬â€œâ€™ï¬‚‘q :X C* le I alY Cimn 1 O L* > t with your purchasel!
