Always working to ‘get it right KOOLâ€"FM morning man Neil (Laughing Boy) Hedley Saturday at King and Breithaupt Sts. Word is out on the street that if he hasn‘t received enough donations to reach his goal by that point, hes going to become more insane than he already is. Quite frankly, I don‘t believe our comâ€" munity is ready for that, so 1 urge you, please get out and support him. For two years running, Neil‘s done a terrific job from high above, let‘s continue to show him that indeed, 1MAl 0d LIFBD | has twied to enhance that theme in the past few years. 3 One of the headscratchers that 4> abbvattling: Oktoberfest Inc. has had to 4 deal with has been the high Q 6 level of executive and volunâ€" P teer participation from people . 3# : in Waterloo, but inversely, the kX w lower turnouts of Waterloo 23 mss people to the events. And so, we have published a guide [{IfS L ef Talâ€"{»TA[MM cach year for the past four years outlining the many fun and exciting ways Waterloo residents, and especially famiâ€" lies, can enjoy themselves. it will never be easy for this festival to shake the image of hoisting a pint and letting go of inhibitions â€"even as a nonâ€" drinker, I recognize it‘s a fact of the event that no one need apologize for â€" but it doesn‘t obscure Oktoberfests steppedâ€" up campaign promoting responsibility for one‘s actions. Look it up, there are dozens of ways its executive, steering committees, volunteer sectors and sponsors have dealt with the issue. The crossâ€"section of those involved with the Advisory Committee itself supports the fact that Oktoberfest is truly interested in everyone not only having a good time, but in also "getting it right." For me, the most obvious example of their success in that regard is my sevenâ€"yearâ€"old son Jordan, who wouldn‘t know a [esthall from a football. What he does know is that Onkel Hans has (at least for 10 days) replaced Joe Carter as his hero, that he had a great time at the Oktoberfest assembly at his school, and that next Thanksgiving, we better not be outa town on parade day. The strength and popularity of "the show" can only be enhanced by us continuing to "get it right", especially with our younger generation. Over the past two decades, my direct involvement with the festival has varied. In university, 1 participated for 21 days of the 10 day event â€" in other words, morning, noon and night. Then, entering the work force, 1 covered a multitude of events, and gained a perspective other than party, party, party. Watching the pride and efforts put forth as the culture and traditions played ouLnudtm'ucu&dygw-tdlflli; That‘s why 1 was so saddened to hear of the accident Saturday night that claimed two lives after a pickâ€"up truck took off from a RIDE spotcheck. The details are not yet known, but undoubtedly, those who denigrate Oktoberfest as a drunken beer bash will use this incident, and elevated drninking/driving stats from last year, as fodder for their debate. The Chronicle was asked, and accepted, to be a corporate sponsor of this years RIDE program, which among its enhanced awareness tools, offers a coupon booklet to the 99.9 per cent of drivers who, in the preâ€"festival words of Oktoberfest executive director Wayne Hussey "get it right." In other words, don‘t drink and drive. After sitting on the Oktoberfest Advisory Board the past couple of years, 1 can honestly say 1 have a greater underâ€" standing and appreciation for all that "stufl" that goes on behind the scenes. it‘s "kool to care."
