PAGE 24 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 1995 by Ian Macpherson A Volvo worthy of the sports car label Did you ever wonder how Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen didn‘t see right through Clark Kent‘s disguise? I mean he is built like a tank â€" that doesn‘t change â€" but he greases his hair back and adds pair of thick glasses and nobody recogâ€" nizes him. I guess the trick is that Clark dresses conservaâ€" tively and is a bit uncoordinated. Volvo‘s image is a lot like Clark‘s â€" safe, reliable and not too flashy! After years of straight edge designing, the 850 mpdvfihamwedfiuhm-mhimdhhuth curve. A turbo and sportswagon soon followed and sales have been so strong that Volvo ceased production of the legendary 240 after 19 years. If you read the review of 850 turbo, you know that I‘m a big fan, not just of its family hauling capabilities but as a sureâ€"footed sports car. But Volvo wasn‘t convinced that its image as a maker of sports cars or even sporty cars was as good as it should be. This led to collaboration between Volvo and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, who races Volvo turbo wagâ€" ons in the British Touring Car Championship, to design the 850 Tâ€"5R. The Tâ€"5R is essentially an 850 turbo (fourâ€"door sedan or fiveâ€"door wagon) with every conceivable option, including sport suspension, traction control, leather upholstery, cliâ€" mate control and the industry‘s only side impact airâ€"bags. So 1995 VOLVO Tâ€"5R far it sounds like a marketing ploy but the Tâ€"R5 is further distinguished by a front air dam with fog lights, 17â€"inch Pirelli Pâ€"zero radials mounted on 17â€"inch titanium gray fiveâ€" spoke alloy wheels and a choice of only yellow or black paint. In the distinct pale yellow with its ultraâ€"low profile tires, the Tâ€"R5 will stand out like Clark Kent showing up at work still wearing his bright red cape and boots. Even Lois is going to start clueing in that there is more to Clark as will anyone lucky enough to catch a glimpse of 100 limited edition modâ€" els destined for Canada. Under the hood, Volvo has spiced up the 2.3 litre, turboâ€" charged inâ€"line fiveâ€"cylinder engine by reprogramming the computer to allow for extra boost at full throttle, pushing peakpowertomhp,(mmnimthenm).Oche (0â€"100 km/hr dashes of around seven seconds. Build up a litâ€" tle speed though and the Tâ€"R5 takes off like it was shot from a rubber band. This midâ€"range power/torque makes the Tâ€" RS5 a passer‘s delight and one of the quickest highway cars I have experienced. It is available with a fourâ€"speed automatic or a fiveâ€"speed manual that is not offered south of the border. My tester eame'equippedwifllthcauwmlfic, wlaichhuthreemode settings â€" normal, winter and sport to help adapt shift patâ€" terns to the conditions at hand. I highly recommend the automatic, which is convenient for everyday driving but is wmuumdwmnawmm-aflmmh wmnmw;nfedm Which is precisely why your Saab dealer is now offering héwlmhmm ~Gased on a 36 mort lease tor 1908 Sanb HOW CAN YOU ENJOY A CONVERTIBLE IF YOU‘RE IN IT WAY OVER YOUR HEAD? [sanrn 450 Belmont Ave. W. Much of the regular 850‘s problem with underâ€"steer has been corrected by the sticky Pirelli racing tires but Volvo engineers should be applauded for building the finest examâ€" ple of a frontâ€"wheel drive sports car ever. Heavy duty shocks and beefier front and rear antiâ€"roll bars help maintain comâ€" posure as the Tâ€"R5 snaps around corners without a thought. Steering is precise and quick but lacks the feel you would find in a BMW 3â€"series. The only problem with this setâ€"up is the ride quality, which is compromised mostly by the 45â€" series tires. The interior layout is identical to the 850‘s with a few aesâ€" thetic touches like bolstered front seats that are trimmed, like the steering wheel, with suede. Door sills are also trimmed with chrome as is the dash with a beautiful black walnut and the Tâ€"R5 comes with the upgraded 160â€"watt Even at $50,000, Volvo won‘t have a problem finding a home for the hundred Tâ€"R5s that it has imported and it will serve well to bolster the company‘s sporting image as will the planned arrival of coupe and cabriolet, based on the 850, by 1997. When I think about it, the Tâ€"R5 is a little bit excesâ€" sive but only because the 850 turbo delivers most of the goods for about $10,000 less. Well, even Clark Kent had to reveal his identity to Lois Lane before he could get anywhere! K I T C H E N E R 744â€"5811
