PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1995 Talk about an unnecessry education expense Professor McCready makes several negative comâ€" ments once again about our education system without any substantiation or documented support. He describes how wonderful education systems in Trinidad, England and China are because of the love for learning among children. Well, we have children in our education system who have a love for learning too. Did he conduct a survey to learn which countries have a higher love for learning? My experience has been that most children have a love for learning; they are naturally curious. Not all children and not all parents are disgruntled with the learning that is taking place. Our two sons have enjoyed many positive learning experiences and caring teachers. Yes there are some problems, but it is not as disastrous as a few individuals (notably columâ€" nists in the Chronicle) deseribe. As far as I am conâ€" cerned, too many of the problems begin at home and then parents expect the schools to correct them. Would he lower the salames of teachers? Would he reduce the heat in schools? Would he remove all of the secretanes and custodians? Just what specific items would he remove from the budget to save several milâ€" ons of dollars and prevent tax increases? He does not say because he does not know. He is simply an armâ€" chair entic He states that *education in Canada is extremely expensive per pupil trained and the results are not that good.* Well, how do economists prove this? Is there some way to measure these results? There must be or Professor McCready, the scholar, would not have made his profound statement. Are we to accept this statement as fact because he is an economics profesâ€" sor and is an expert in the field of not just economics but education too? Where is the documentation, where are the statis tcs. the analyses, the flow charts? There are none because you cannot measure this! Come on, McCready. Be honest if you cannot be scholarly. (But these words are synonymous, aren‘t they?) Professor McCready provides no financial details to support his comments about needing to get "more nang from the education buck". What does he mean? What expensos wou‘d he delete? Does he realize that s per cent of the education budget is for salaries? That leaves 20 per cent in case he forgot his basic m ith for book purchases, utilities, maintenance, supâ€" olies. repaurs. capital purchases, transportation. And fon‘t forget the computers that all of the parents want their children to use at school so that they can be preâ€" pared for their future jobs on the "information highâ€" way" 1 Adjsetors Camnda 1. GF Contrd Professor McCready attacks two trustees, Sean Strickland and Jane Mitchell: ..."why didn‘t you repreâ€" sent we taxpayers by making sure that education, not bureaucracy, was served well"" Yet, he offers no supâ€" port for his comment. Did he speak to them about the budget and ask what they were supporting? Did he quote them in his column? No. He just attacks them. No substantiation required. No explanation. No proof. This is good journalism? Is this how Professor McCready teaches economics? Does he substantiate what he preaches to his stuâ€" dents? Or does he just ramble off his personal, negaâ€" tive views of the world? If his column is any example of his scholarship, then his students are not getting the "biggest bang for our education buck". And Wilfid Laurier University could save "we taxpayers" several thousand dollars by eliminating this unnecessary eduâ€" cation expense!
