Local arts release compilation CD Centre announces fundraising projects The Centre in the Square is embarking on two fundraising projects over the next few months to replace the o , , theatre‘s near 15â€"yearâ€" cegfof w hees mation. The programs have been distributed free of charge by ushers. But soon, acrylic bins with builtâ€"in contribution boxes will be set up throughout the theatre. The second project, a "Once In a Lifetime Celebrity Auction", will be held in conjuncâ€" tion with the Centre‘s 15th anniversary this September. It will be an opportunity for collecâ€" tors and theatre goers to purchase oneâ€"ofâ€"aâ€" kind items that have an entertainment theme. The party happens from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Doors open at 8 p.m. Hillside Festival is offering a performing opportunity for musicians who either missed the festival‘s deadline for submission or were not chosen to perform. Those musicians are invited to showcase their talents at a special fundraising event, May 31 (venue to be announced). One act will be chosen from the benefit conâ€" cert to perform at the Hillside Festival this summer. For the past 48 years, men from Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo and surrounding area have been meeting every Tuesday evening, 52 weeks a year, for the love of singing richly harmonized barber shop music of the turn of the century. "I‘m a 40â€"year man," Mitchell says of his involvement with the organization. "I had heard of barbershopping â€" 1 had just moved from Toronto to this area, and | heard about barbershopâ€" ping and was interested in it. So | went out (to a rehearsal), and, 1‘ll tell you, 1 was hooked." Twin City Harmonizers, Mitchell says, has many members who been active in the group for more than 25 years. In fact one, George Stevens, has been a Twin City Harmonizer since the group was formed 48 years ago. _ "But it‘s not all and old man‘s sociâ€" ety," Mitchell says.
