By volunteering, you can brighten the lives of many, helpâ€" ing yourself and your community Columnist‘s criticisms were misguided The defence of the Strings Program was not misâ€" guided as stated by Sandy Baird in his column of April 12th. It is Mr. Baird himself who is misguided. In his column of April 5th, Mr. Baird took a cheap shot at the "ohâ€"soâ€"vocal backers of the elementary strings program". I was surprised at his criticism and said so in a personal FAX I was even more surprised to see my FAX printed almost in its entirety in the "Once Over Lightly" colâ€" umn of April 12th. This was a personal FAX to Mr. Baird, not a "letter to the editor". "Surprise" is not synonymous with "bitter" and I see nothing bitter in my comments to Mr. Baird. I merely expressed surprise at his lack of admiration for the activists who supported the Strings Program and wrote letters of support and gave wellâ€"informed preâ€" sentations to the Waterloo County Board of Educaâ€" tion. In his column of April 12th, Mr. Baird states: "The energy is commendable but misguided because it focuses on a single issue and single issue advocacy is the curse of our governance. WATERLOO WATERLOO TOWNE FCOWAJER. On whose authority does Mr. Baird proclaim that singleâ€"issue advocacy is misguided? Many single issues are of prime importance in this world. Are we not to fight for worthy causes simply because they are single issues? What a sorry state this world would be in if everyone listened to Mr. Baird. It is apparent from reading his column that Mr. Baird has no idea as to the arguments put forward by our group for keeping Strings. Nor does he seem to realize that the Waterloo County Board of Education welcomes and appreciates delegations who come to speak on an issue. They listen to what is said, anaâ€" lyze, and vote accordingly. In our case, they obviously agreed with our arguments and voted to keep Strings in the 1995 budget. Why does Mr. Baird have trouble understanding this form of democracy? The Strings budget of less than $400,000. is not a major compoâ€" nent in the overall budget. By comparing Strings with astrology, fingerâ€"paintâ€" ing and basketâ€"weaving, Mr. Baird only makes himâ€" self look foolish. Perhaps he should come to the Strings Concert at W.C.1. on April 25th and listen to the performance given by the students he has belitâ€" tled. It might then make him eat humble pie.
