PAGE 12 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 1995 While turning out my pockets, I came across an old note on the back of an envelope. See what you think of it. "There is no justification for preâ€" sent existence other than its expansion into an infinitely open future." I believe I got it from the introduction to that great book, The Second Sex, by Simone de Beauvoir Liberty is the key to happiness Is that the way you see your life? That it is expanding into an infiâ€" nitely open future? Here‘s another thought: *Every individual concerned with justifying his existence feels that his existence involves an undefined need to transcend himâ€" self... to engage in freely chosen projects". I think this is where the importance of selfâ€"examination comes into the picture If we are to transcend ourselves, to expand ourselves as persons into an infinitely open future, we must be able to choose to pursue those projects that are best suited to us. We also need the freedom to pick our own projects We‘re not concerned with happiâ€" ness here but with liberty, for with liberty, we can pursue our own happiness as we see fit. We can find whiuch projects in life are best fitted to our abilities and desires. To spark this expansion, we need something which brings interest in the future, something in which we can become deeply involved, something which we can look forward to. Some find this in religron, for others it‘s a course of study leading to more knowledge; or to impart knowledge like teachâ€" ing or wnting a book. For the business person, it is the continued growth of the enterprise and the development of new prodâ€" ucts or services. For the seientist, it‘s the slow uncovering of nature‘s sectets. For millions, it is raising a family » Quite likely, your project will have nothing to do with earning a living, giving you greater freedom of choice. What‘s your project leadâ€" ing into an infinitely open future? If you don‘t know or aren‘t sure, the most valuable way to spend time would be in thinking about this Not knowing there are interestâ€" ing projects to justify one‘s exasâ€" tence, millicns of people simply escape from themselves and their world. This is easy to do today There are countless distractions that do nothing more than use up time and help them avord facing the fact that their lives are direcâ€" tionless. For many, the manifestations of this common condition appear as bodily ills â€" psychosomatic probâ€" lems can be caused this way FAST TAKEâ€"OUT Service 6 Acom LTD. 884â€"1750 .asaEMADE, nomEMAD Qwion RMGS BP ) errW P ruespay _ _ Reg. 255 10 a.m. â€" 11 p.m 256 WEBER ST.
