PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1994 No doubt some promises will be broken and some kept but the votâ€" ers always have the choice of remembering who did what and vote accordingly in the next elecâ€" tion. The danger is if we all opted out, what would be the result? Waterloo is a great place to live. This is because of our elected offiâ€" cials, even if at times, some deciâ€" sions are inane; inept; poor. Call them what you will, it is proof that our system works, All we need is for 100 per cent of our citizens to vote to make the system work 100 per cent. Now that would make an interesting election. We might moan about our local democracy â€" it‘s not perfect but it is a lot better than the alternative! I have a suggestion for Pattie. Don‘t write about the lack of effecâ€" tiveness of the system; stand up for what you think. RUN IN THE NEXT ELECTION and try to effect change. It‘s an interesting thesis Pattie Moran puts forward in her column of Nov. 24, even if she did it someâ€" what "tongueâ€"inâ€"cheek!" However, I personally give the 38.7 per cent of voters who exercised their democratic right more credit than Pattie does. Those who vote, vote because they care for city and its welfare and they want to have a say. Let us be very thankful for these hard core of voters; otherâ€" wise we would be governed by a body of faceless bureaucrats, The very way Pattie addresses the new council as "Silly Hall" shows the same lack of interest or care that the 61.3 per cent of nonâ€" voters seem to show and this is before the council has even met! Let‘s keep democracy hundred years did not end until A.D. 101 began. So, as of Fred‘s proposed bash, 1999 centuries will have elapsed in our calendar. One more year will make it 2000. To put it another way, 1999 will be only the 1999th year of the calenâ€" dar or the 99th year of the 20th century. The century will be comâ€" plete at the END of the hundredth year, not the beginning. It‘s no big deal, though. Nothing spectacular happens just because the odometer clicks over one more notch. Besides, Fred and the group probably enjoy partying enough to meet again on Dec. 31, 2000 to usher in the new century in grand style! After all, this gives them another year to build up their treasury and age the wine a but it‘s a majority of those who care enough to vote. A large cheer for those who take the time to accountable and responsible to no one‘ She asks how many of us wanted to be represented by those who were elected? Perhaps it may not be a majority of the population Fred‘s party‘s iust a year too early Judging from his column this week, Mr. Sagel! is blessed with a wonderful group of friends. I furâ€" ther infer that their 21st century club plans to meet on New Year‘s Eve of the last year of the 20th century. If so, why does Fred refer several times to 1999? A century is a period of a hunâ€" dred years. Since our era begins with the year A.D. 1 (and the year before was 1 B.C., not 0), the first Waterloo A'rrnEss u**sSISPECIAL OFFER eactO® .. ‘;“ ‘ ko‘o ED § u)* k“‘“a?w“fl}i_lfi the â€"â€" s _K; | Sleep Factory SHIRTMAKERS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FACTORY SALE GREAT SELECTION OF MrEn‘s AND LADIES SHIRTS Cash or Cheque Accepted 5 MICHAEL STREET, KITCHENER DOUBLE.....309 set s19 QUEEN......329 set 5so KING........ 479 Set 799 zs $1 QQ c MAKI Saturday, December 3, 1994 9:00 a.m. â€" 2:00 p.m. Sm P t CAPTAIN‘S PTAI â€"$ "= 169 DOUBLE.....269 set «34 QUEEN......289 Set «74 469 set 1e 125 pm.
