Anyone who witnessed the Japanese invasion of North America in the late 1970s and early 1980s most likely was impressed with Mazda‘s sporty RXâ€"7 with its Wanke! Rotary engine. Astute industry observers also would have paid some attention to the economical Mazda GLC, introduced in 1977. I‘m not sure what the GLC was in reference to. Mazda‘s keen marketing department hooked on to it and every ad for the compact car contained the phrase "Great Little Car", Although it didn‘t have as great an impact as other Japanese imports, spocifically the Honda Civic, the GLC was a fairly successful entry in its own right. As the years went by, the GLC was refined. Problem was, this wasn‘t enough as Honda continually introduced new designs for its, by then, phenomenally successful Civic. So for 1987, After driving the new 1995 Mazda 323, I have but one comment: "You‘ve come a long way, baby!" AND THAT‘S JUST THE LEASE PRICE. 1995 MAZDA 323 shtt‘s Cslany, drer the 323. I was a little disappointed with the last incarnation. It just seemed a little too much of an econoâ€"box. It was with a cerâ€" tain amount of pleasure when I saw the first concept drawâ€" ings for a new 323. The Mazda designers should be congratulated for taking the 323 from the drawing board to the showroom floor without compromising the initial concept of the car. What has resulted is a very sharp, distinctive car. I wouldn‘t call it graceful yet the lines are typically Mazda, smooth and flowing with a high tail finishing it off. Some may not like it but in keeping with Mazda‘s new line up, it is Mazda totally redesignéd the GLC and gave it a new moniker, the 323. This renaming brought the compact into place with the rest of the line up. An former girlfriend of mine bought an 87 323 and I was duly impressed. It was as refined, comfortable and powerful as the Honda Civic that my roommate had and less expensive to boot. Interior space is quite cavernous. The tall rear end allows exceptional â€"headroom for both front and rear occupants. 1 wish some luxury cars had as much headroom. For once. a compact car lives up to the claim that four adults can be seated comfortably. The instrument pod and door panels continue the exterior‘s theme of organic curves. The overall effect ties the interior and exterior together quite nicely. The GS model I tested was equipped with the optional passenger side airbag ($1,000) yet the dashboard still contains a large glove box and an open shelf. Large pockets can be found on the driver‘s door and behind the front passenger seat and convenient trays are located to the outside of both front seats. A covered storage console can hold seven compact disks or an assortment of gloves and sunglasses.
