_ Snell boisters Siskin defence PAGE 38 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1994 Chronicle Staff With the addition of veteran defenceman Wes Snell to the line up, Waterioo Siskin coach Brian Hayton is looking down the road to the playoffs. Snell, who played for the Elmira Sugar Kings a couâ€" ple of seasons ago before heading out west to play junior hockey in Montana with former Sugar King coach Bob Zimmer, has the size, speed and maturity that Hayton is looking for in a defenceman. And Hayton wasn‘t too surprised to find sixâ€"foot, 185 pound Snell on his doorstep looking for a place to play. "I think it (Montana) wasn‘t all it was cracked up to be," said Hayton. "He was painted a pretty rosy picâ€" ture. There were a lot of bus trips and the calibre of hockey wasn‘t that great." Snell played part of the season with the Kingston Frontinacs of the Ontario Hockey League and also played with their Tier l1 affiliate, also located in "He has some junior A experience and I think he‘s going to help to add some stability and poise back there (defence). We have a young blueline and the opportunity to get someone with experience was important." Snell, who‘s been paired with defenceman Terry Elaine V. F. Gross " Crupwmolmm Who says people don‘t read small ads YOU ARE To all my helpers and supporters A Sincere Thankâ€"you MIKE CONNOLLY Martin during the past two games, came to the club in good shape, but with more ice time, Hayton believes that he will improve his conditioning level. "Playing in the league in Montana, I don‘t think the calibre was what you have in our league. I think the whole atmosphere was a bit more laid back." Siskins also released centre/left winger Sheldon Mustard and centre Chris Downs, both who were caught up in the numbers game. "In a nutshell, it came down to numbers. He (Musâ€" tard) was having a hard time cracking our line up and being an import player (Stratford) made it a little bit tougher keeping him around as a 13th forward. He wasn‘t fitting into one of our top 12 forwards. The same went for Chris (Downs) as well. He too was caught up in the numbers." In Waterloo on Sunday, the Siskins lost a hardâ€" fought 2â€"1 decision to the Cambridge Winter Hawks. Both Cambridge goals were scored on the powerplay with the winner coming off the stick of Brain Ladyk at 6:55 in the third period. Jordy McGowan scored the other Cambridge goal while Ian MacDougall, who just finished serving a six minute penalty, stormed out of the box to score the Siskins goal on former Siskin netâ€" minder Joe Benninger. In Orangeville on Friday, Colin Schmidt‘s shortâ€" handed goal in the second period was the winner as the Siskins topped the Crushers 3â€"1.
