If you recall our review of the Del Sol Si last September, you will remember that the only complaint we had was that the car was released too late into the summer. We felt a midâ€" July test would allow us to really get a true appreciation for the Del Sol‘s open air talents 1 am sure vou are all aware of the fanfare around which this little rocket blasted onto the auto scene late last sumâ€" mer Well, Honda provided us a 1994 Del Sol, smack in the muddle of July during one of this past summer‘s scorching heat waves. To top it off, our tester came equipped with a 1 6â€"litre DOHC 16â€"valve, 4 VTEC engine. A lot of letters and numbers I know. But the bottom line number means the most 160 hp!" From a 1.6 litre engine"? Until lately, only the ultraâ€"rmich Acura NSX got the benefit { VTEC. Then last year, Honda provided a VTEC engine »ption in its Prelude and had trouble keeping them long enough to get one inside a showroom. Honda, which didn‘t get to its lofty position in car sales by chance, recognized the opportunity and added VTEC on to its 1.6 litre block as an option for its Civic series PAGE 56 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1994 By Gary Highfield It‘s hard to resist the VTEC â€"equipped Del Sol huser aban ut w u8ut ut They call the VTEC an option but after a short test drive, REGULAR. AVAILABLE IN TWO SIZES: it would be hard for anyone to resist getting the VTEC in their Del Sol. No option, you just have to have it! The Si verâ€" sion has 125 hp and performs adequately however, anyone considering this type of car obviously has a unique view on life and most assuredly will go for the performance of the VTEC Our only other criticism of the Del Sol during our last test was the glaring absence of ABS on such a sporty vehicle. We pointed out that if GM can offer ABS as standard on a Cavaâ€" lier, what is Honda doing holding out on ABS for the Del Sol? Well, I am pleased to announce that Honda has come to its senses and installed ABS. Mind you, only those that go for the VTEC get ABS as standard equipment. It isn‘t even an option on the Si version. I can only assume that this is Honda‘s way of limiting production variables, thereby reducâ€" ing their overall production costs. It also allows dealers to stock Del Sol‘s without having to worry that the particular set up they have in the showroom doesn‘t have the options a customer wants (one theory is that the Del Sol is a very visual, emotional purchase and a dealer will want to comâ€" plete a sale before the customer has a chance at a second thought). Whatever the reasoning, the added ABS on the loaded Del Sol is a welcome addition, especially when you 485 King St. North Waterloo, Ontario | (519) 885â€"5090 Bâ€"K MOTORS JAPAN‘S IMPORT CAR OF THE YEAR | SANRN _ SAAB _ isuzu | are trying to rein in 160 horses. > Interior wise, nothing has really changed in the Del Sol since that last review. Cockpit room is surprisingly spacious, even for six footers. All controls are easily at hand and very legible. A comfortable driving position is easily attainable and seat support is quite good. For long drives, there is a semblance of a coffee cup holder, although it‘s almost imposâ€" sible to find and most people will be in the ditch before they are able to retrieve their coffee. Overall, I am still impressed with the interior of the Del Sol. It carries the fun theme of the exterior yet exudes the practicality typical of Honda. I guess the bottom line for a review for any one is whether you would recommend it to someone you know. Well, my wife‘s mother took a shine to the Del Sol during our last test and questioned me on whether it would be the right car for her. All jokes about motherâ€"inâ€"laws aside, after some discusâ€" sion about her transportation needs, we decided that the Del Sol would indeed be a good choice. So she took the plunge and bought a bright red version and hasn‘t looked back since. Both she and my fatherâ€"inâ€"law love the car and take every chance they get to drive it. If the Del Sol is winning that kind of praise from our parents, imagine what it is doing to the younger generation! 450 Belmont Ave. W. _ 744â€"5811 Aodssucsinsantvathe THE 1995 VOLYO 850 SPORTSWAGON: C I T C H E N E R SAAB 900 Based on RJC VOLVO
