In cold weather, motor oil flows slower and takes longer to lubricate the engine so most automotive experts recommend switching to a thinner, fasterâ€" flowing grade of oil in winter. The lower the number in front of the ‘W on the label, the better the oil will flow to vital engine parts in colder temperatures. For example, a 5W30 flows better than a 10W30 in cold temperatures and is therefore the recommended grade for winter driving. Motor oils job is to provide the engine‘s metal parts with a thin film of lubrication which keeps metalâ€"onâ€" metal friction and the resulting wear to a minimum. A good oil helps pistons, crankshafts and valves move easily inside the engine while at the same time colâ€" "Having the dealer or installer select the proper oil for winter driving can improve horsepower and increase fuel economy," explains Pileggi. "The lubricaâ€" tion provided by a quality motor oil can prolong engine life under regular driving conditions. But as most of us know, the Canadian winter is far from regâ€" ular driving conditions." Pileggi, who is technical services coâ€"ordinator for Valvoline Canada, provides technical support to the company‘s customers, advises that semiâ€"synthetic motor oil is the ideal choice for most cars. "Each motor oil formulation has its strong points," says Pileggi. "Because so many of us drive in very cold ent temperatures." The icy grip of Canada‘s winter doesn‘t have to squeeze the life out of your car‘s engine this year if you think first about changing your motor oil to meet Canadian driving conditions. "A lot of drivers put snow tires on their vehicles, change to winter floor mats, get the body rustproofed and flush out the radiator when they are getting their cars ready for winter," says motor oil expert Kathy Pileggi. "But most of them just continue to get the same type of motor oil installed season after season, not realizing that oil performs differently under differâ€" PAGE 46 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1994 The change in seasons means it‘s time to change your car‘s oil Insert Express is an inexpensive, effective way of hitung that promotions. Along with semiâ€"sythetics, motor oil is also availâ€" able in mineralâ€"based and fully synthetic formulas. Mineralâ€"based oils are made from natural petroâ€" leum products and have been the industry standard for years, offering a wide range of protection at norâ€" mal operating temperatures. Synthetic motor oil is a processâ€"enhanced premium product. It is scientifically developed for high perforâ€" mance luxury and racing cars but it is not recomâ€" mended for some car models prior to 1980 due to changes in engine technology. Semiâ€"synthetics are a blend of the best properties of superior performance at an affordable price. = +m mm nentoans [ i l j |Oil Spraying |
