Siskin reunion a wonderful celebration In June of this year, my husband (who is an exâ€" Waterloo Siskin) and I had the pleasure of attending the Waterloo Siskin‘s 60th anniversary and reunion. A number of old friendships were rekindled and it was great to see some of the players Jim played hockey with in the ‘50s. More exciting was to watch the expression on the faces of our four adult children and grandchildren when their Dad and Papa rode on the back of a fire engine in the parade in downtown Waterloo. The City of Waterloo and the people living there still maintain that warmth and welcome home spirit. Many thanks to you all and especially to the comâ€" mittee representing the Waterloo Siskins. A great deal of thought and many hours had to be given to organize a wonderful weekend Piatkowski equates growth with prosperity but as we have seen, the reverse is frequently true. One has only to look at Canada‘s overcrowded cities to see the devastating effects of unrestricted urban growth on landscape which was once pristine. To continue to admit 250,000 immigrants annually when our own young people cannot find jobs is utter madness. Canadians are not so narrowâ€"minded as to prohibit all immigrants but they are totally opposed to the "wide open" immigration policies practised by succesâ€" sive Federal governments over the past three decades. Canadians rightly object to the admission of people without proper skills, to bogus refugees and to people with criminal records in their home countries. They serious crimes are not deported immediately. Sadly, it took the murder of Constable Baylis to reveal how utterly incompetent the Immigration Department has Canada who do not share his fervent views on unreâ€" stricted immigration. It is a sad commentary on today‘s society when columnists resort to inflammaâ€" tory invective to prove their point. Immigration is not an issue of racism. It is a matter of common sense. However noble the objective, Canada simply cannot afford to become the dumping ground for the world‘s At 5.7 billion, the world is already grossly overpopuâ€" lated. The addition of another five billion by the year 2030 will be ecologically devastating. Today there are over 49 million people who are classed as permanent with the passage of time. Older Canadians are neither racists nor bigots. They mourn the passing of a quiâ€" eter, simpler and more gentle era when jobs were plentiful, the dollar was high and immigration was 1 TB TCO Te mt 3 ~----------------------_----------- Scott Piatkowski‘s recent article entitled "Our Future Depends on Immigration" made a number of disparaging remarks about the many people in PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17. 1994 _ lcra Owned And Operated Locally PAYS YOUR DEDUCTIBLE up to C . on most < 5 000 windshield replacement., claims at your P Home, Office, Farm ar APPLE Jim and Dorothy Le Clair IN WATERLOO â€" 355 Weber St. N. 746â€"8004 IN KITCHENER â€" 1464B Victoria St. N. 579â€"1980 â€" 10 Manitou Dr. 740â€"2555 David A Crow Auto Gla discovering what goes on at the library on a dayâ€"toâ€" day basis? Does he use the libeary and know the frusâ€" tration of long waits for books or the library‘s inability to buy books? Does Mr. Connolly visit the children‘s department to find the lifeâ€"long love of reading that is fostered there? I suspect not or he would have not made such a ridiculous suggestion about the operatâ€" ing hours of the children‘s department. Fourth, Mr. Connolly asserts that all the citizens he has spoken with want services maintained but do not want a tax increase, I spoke with Mr. Connolly shortly after he was appointed (not elected) to Council and told him that I would support a tax increase for a betâ€" ter library. He obviously only remembers people who There is a solution for those voters who want a vibrant and wellâ€"funded library system and that is to vote for people who speak and act for the good of the library in the upcoming municipal election. the standard of libraries of comparable size, his actions speak louder than his words. Second, Mr. Connolly asserts that with the money spent from the book reserve fund, the library actually spent $343,419 on books. This reserve fund was set up to be used over a number of years to upgrade the colâ€" lection at WPL but has been exhausted in less than half the time intended. The result is a severe shortage of funds to buy books over the next several years. The Tack of vision shown by Waterioo Council on longâ€"term financial concerns is going to come back to haunt us I wish to comment on Councillor Mike Connolly‘s letter in the August 10, 1994 issue of the Waterico Chronicle in which he attacked Scott Piatkowski‘s colâ€" umn on the Waterloo Public Library. to full and adequate services by voting against a small and very necessary increase in the library budget.
