PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 1994 Rebutting the columnists How desperately "rights" rhetoriticians try to disâ€" ant". Chronicle columnists, Piatkowski and Brockelbank, are prime examples of the peeudoâ€"intelâ€" of Canadians who believe that their overlyâ€"liberal verâ€" sion of the country is what it ought to be. But I should speak, perhaps, in less inflammatory terms. Thereâ€" fore, a few points submitted in response to the said journalists‘ columns of last week: (1) Piatkowski: the same sex rights bill was not a part of "the fight for human rights." It was/is, rather, a fight for special privileges. It was a demand from a very small minority of the Canadian populace (two â€" three per cent) that the vast majority must alter their moral viewpoints concerning what is best for family, children and society, in order to accommodate the tenâ€" dencies and interests of that minority. The privileges they demanded are unlike any that are granted to any other similar minority group (ie., by any other minority which is distinguished on the basis of preferâ€" ences, or behavior). (2) Brockelbank: "intolerance" goes both ways. It amazes me that whenever someone says "no" to any group or individual they are automatically labelled intolerant bigots. The mere diversity of our cultural milieu does not require that any of us should have to give up any aspect of our own traditions in order to include others. It is also painfully obvious that the main vocalizers of the "intolerance" claim are primarâ€" ily prejudiced against anything that smacks of a WASP or mainstreamâ€"Christian heritage. Somehow, it has come to be believed by the PC faction, that WASPs, WMs, and Christians are the central enemies of our country and culture. If wanting to hold their own traditions and culture sacred to them is a crime, then what, pray tell, is the difference between their desire and that of the Sikh wishing to maintain the significance of his religious headgear? â€"(3) Piatkowski: "discriminatory laws" are not all inherently bad. Discrimination is, in essence, the abilâ€" Colonial Acres Plaza 746â€"5456 373 Bridge St. W. _ we Deliver . aning n se masen jor bvng A PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM SPONSORED BY YOUR LOCAL HOSPITALS Whether you are looking for that perfect added touch for your home or a gift for any occasion, 1.C. We discriminate, in the law, against childâ€"abuse, pornography, public sexâ€"acts, and other acts or sexual tendencies which are considered to be inappropriate public behavior and/or harmful to is among the sexâ€"acts or tendencies which, if associâ€" ated, for example, with childâ€"rearing, would be detriâ€" mental to the individuals involved, and, if legitimated or promoted as something better than the traditional fnflym.wmldhh-nfilltondsymthe whole, has not yet been discounted by any studies of the subject. In fact, those beliefs still have the most tific statistics I have witnessed from either side in the (4) Brockelbank and Piatkowski: it may turn out to be true that judicial decisions will overturn the demoâ€" cratic decision of the government in time. It may turn out that all of the soâ€"called underdogs for whom you demand the majority must make extreme concessions in regard to their moral values and popular traditions, will receive those concessions, even by legal means. ‘These consequences, however, will not be the results of genuine democratic process, nor will they prove to be the outcomes of genuine patriotism to Canada. Brockelbank‘s Canada "doesn‘t include bigots." Neiâ€" ther would mine if it could; but mine does involve the prmcipksol'dunocncyandlfierty,mdtgood-ior-lll centred moral code. The goodâ€"forâ€"someâ€"atâ€"theâ€" expenseâ€"ofâ€"most morality these columnists espouse will be the downfall of a united and free Canada. We have already heard the cries of the antiâ€"democrats who claim that Bob Rae should not have called for an open vote on the same sex bill, and that "a better job of screening (party) candidates" should be done in the future. Big Brother does appear to be taking over, at least in the minds of a few ambitious reporters. A member of OPENING SOON Do you know if you received blood betwoeen 1978â€"85.
