Saab designers have done a fantastic job modernizing the 900 in a way that maintains its classic lines but still says this is a car for the ‘90s. The new 900 is slightly wider and taller with a longer wheelbase and less rear overhang than its predecessor but believe me no one is going to mistake §t for anything but a Saab. My only complaint with the styling is the Aâ€"pillar which is so thick that it obscures the driver‘s field of vision as does the rather high hatch cover. Still built in Trollhaten, Sweden, the 900 is presently only offered as a fiveâ€"door hatchback with a threeâ€"door hatchback and convertible model to arrive later this spring. ‘The 900 lineâ€"up offers a range of engines including a stanâ€" dard 2.3 L, 16â€"vaive, twinâ€"cam fourâ€"cylinder that can generâ€" ate 150 hp â€" a sophisticated 185 hp, fourâ€"cylinder turboâ€"charged version will soon be available. The real story though is the sixâ€"cylinder engine, a first for Saab! That‘s not bad, but the real fun starts at highway speeds because when you get the engine over 4200 rpm the 900 takes off like a dart. I also found fuel economy to be surprisingly reasonable at 8.1 L/100km highway and 9.5 L/100km city. ‘The manual fiveâ€"speed transmission is good but it‘s still on the rubbery side and I don‘t care for the first gear ratio, which seems to low.
