"What we‘re asking you to do is change slightly what you choose. We want people to make small, doable changes. If they make a drastic change, they won‘t stick to it. This month, make a small change. And next month make another small change. If those are the only two changes you can make, then you‘re better than you were two months before." Of those surveyed in Waterloo Region, 73 per cent (12 years and older) had at least one drink in the past year. Also, 21 per cent are considered nonâ€"drinkers, having consumed no alcohol in at least the past year. Binge (more than 10 drinks on one occasion) drinkâ€" ing, which can result in accidents and death, is prevaâ€" lent among males and teenagers. Of the males surveyed, 36 per cent binge drink, while 14 per cent of the women surveyed binge drink. And 40 per cent of all binge drinkers are between 12 and 19 years old. According to the survey, 86 per cent of Waterloo resâ€" idents feel their drinking habits will not lead to health problems, 10 per cent of drinkers older than 16 have been assessed as either alcoholic or possibly alcoholic, and 20 per cent have attempted to drink less alcohol. That attempt, Schumilas says, is the result of changâ€" ing social norms. "It comes a lot from the antiâ€"drinking and driving push or social norm that seems to becoming more clear," Schumilas says. "I think more adults recognize that they can‘t drink and drive, and they tend to be cutting down for that reason. Also, we‘re going through a phase where there‘s a general preoccupaâ€" tion with trying to be healthier." _ _ Tobacco use is decreasing, Schumilas says. "It‘s surprising how few people really know all of the risks involved with smoking. A lot of people think about lung cancer, but they don‘t think about heart disease, for example. So it seems like the risks have never been a big deterrent. It‘s more the general social attiâ€" tude that this is not okay." The survey showed that 47 per cent of men exercise regularly while only 39 per cent of women exercise regularly. And that, Schumilas says, is a big concern. "We‘ve reviewed other literature to find out why this might be, and really what it comes down to is the fact that women tend to give up on physical activities once they finish school," Schumilas says. "If they‘re in a childâ€"rearing situation, that ends up occupying most of their time. It‘s impossible to get back into being active â€" they‘re just plain exhausted and too busy." Schumilas says most women see exercise as someâ€" thing they have to do to look better, while men see exercise to be healthier. Men are also physically active for social reasons. "Women who are active are motivated by appearâ€" ance or weight loss. Men want to feel better, and so their activities are more in tune with health, Schumiâ€" las says. It‘s also a social thing. Men do things with other guys â€" kick the ball around in the park, or book some ice time for a game of hockey. Most women don‘t do that. "So I think there are some things that we don‘t fully activity, And maybe we‘re perpetuating them with the way we set up recreational activities in our commuâ€" nity. There are many barriers which prevent women from being physically active, but we‘re exploring those Those interested in knowing more about nutrition, or healthy living in general, may call the Waterloo Regional Health Unit‘s Healthy Lifestyles division at 741â€"3820. eals In Town (Continued from page 8) The 1993 Toyota Corolla (Just Past Fairway Rd.) 3131 King St. E.
