PAGE 4 â€" VMTE&OO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1992 3. Lost no sleep over the daily UV ratings: Last May, in anticipation of a hot, hazy, and humid summer, we bought White Lily Sun Barricade rating 128. I‘m not sure how to get the cap off, but of course, who cares now? 4. Counted the number of games of golf without rain on one hand: That‘s because my umbrella is now soldered to the other hand. 5. Played too much golf to avoid getting pneumonia: What‘s more fun in the summertime than a sore throat and hacking cough â€" when it isn‘t caused by hayfever. 6. Visited a water park: We did. Call me crazy. 7. Booked a summer cottage for two weeks: Nah. Just threw that one in. Nobody is that crazy. 8. Went to a Blue Jay game: Ah, the sky was blue, the breeze heavenly, the park was truly outstanding, and the only sour note was that the home team won. You see, we were at Camden Yards in Baltimore at the time. â€" 9. Injured my elbow on a water slide: Well, it‘s not really a water slide, we used to call it our front steps. 10. Cut the grass, Part I: April 18, I remember it well, there was still ice in the garden. 11. Cut the grass, Part II: A new release, soon to appear at a front yard near you. Don‘t operate those electric mowers in wet weather! 12. Went to the COE: That‘s the good news. Bad news is, the time we went, well, you guessed it. I was able to brush up however, on the latest in central vac systems, saw a hybrid cow/ horse display, and got a sore tummy eating my favorite Midway treat, candy flop. No, the spelling is correct. 13. Went on a threeâ€"hour tour: Unfortunately, the weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed, if not for the courage of the fearless crew, we surely would be lost. Just like this entire summer has been The only employee at our company with enough chutzpah to wear loud checked suits and call me "Rickeeee", Harry was a joy to be around. In eschewing retirement to join our firm, he brought not only increased credibility and respectability to our publications, but also his delightfully positive "love of life" style. His pet expression with me was always "great to see you, Rickeeee, thanks for showing up." To which today I say, "back at you, Harry. And from all of us at Fairway, thank you for showing up." Though I knew him personally only four short years, I was saddened like thousands of others in our community at the news of the passing last Friday of Harry Baird, former advertising director of the Kâ€"W Record and more recently account executive with Fairway‘s Today‘s Seniors publication. At once an employer‘s and coâ€"workers‘ dream, Harry was deeply committed to his work, took great pride in the industry, and yet his dry wit and charm were often seen as his greatest tools of the trade. He was the heart and soul of a community circle that radiated from his own family through to business, service clubs and the many charities and local organizations who reaped tremendous benefit from his tireless efforts and countless contacts. As we begin to spin our cocoon for the cold, dreary months ahead (will anyone notice?), let‘s stick with tradition and take one look back at the summer of ‘92, a.k.a. What I Did On My Summer Vacation, If Anything. 1. Went to the beach: Yes. And once we got there, we turned around and came home. 2. Avoided sunburn at camp: Uh huh. We avoided a lot of things at camp. Like fun. And playing outside. And campfires. Hello, Chronicleâ€"ites, and welcome back to class after our long, hot summer. Oops, that was last year‘s speech. Well, anyway, welcome back. This summer was simply jamâ€"packed with things to do Waterioo Chronicle Second Class Mail Registration Number 5540 Published every Wednesday by The Fairway Group Incorporated 215 Fairway Rd.
