Fields got his start in Vaudeville as ‘"The Eccentric Tramp Juggler®‘, long before his familiar cynical drawl graced the silver screen. He m known among jugglers for the astounding keeping 'unuln cigar boxes in flight at.one time. 7. But,â€"while such dexterity is usually left to the seriously adept, aspiring buskers wishing to try their hand at the revered art of juggling, may, by following a few basic instructions, easily master a simple threeâ€"ball cascade to delight and amaze their friends. Since the beginner is likely to drop the occasional juggle, let us begin by choosing three palmâ€"sized balls, rather than cutting our teeth on flaming torches or butcher knives. A word to the wise at this point: make sure Fido is otherwise occupied or he may confuse your serious study with playtime. Start you exercises by simply tossing a ball in the air and catching it. This should create the illusion of supreme selfâ€"confidence. Once you feel comfortâ€" able with this, try keeping two balls in the air by alternately tossing them up with just one hand. When you‘re finally ready to get down to some serious business, cradle one ball in the palm of your left hand. Cradle a second ball in your right palm, with a third ball cradled in the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the same hand. Don‘t panic yet Since ancient Egyptian times, juggling has been the mainstay of the jester‘s art. Through the centuries, and around the world, crowds have thrilled to the uncanny legerdemain of performers juggling everything from balls and clubs to rings, plates, knives, torches and cigar boxes. The only prerequisite for a good juggler is the ability to toss and catch a ball. This is not so say that the accomplished master is not a genius. Never let it be said! But most people, given half a chance, can certainly become experienced enough to try this at Before you start the actual juggling, make sure your back is straight. Keep those elbows in close to the body, with forearms extended in front of you It‘s important at this point to imagine a window frame with its base running just below the hands and its top just above eye level, bounded on either side by your body width. Every move which follows will take place within this imaginary plane. Whatever goes around comes around. That‘s certainly true of Waterloo‘s renowned Buskers Carnival. It might also be a fitting motto for the everâ€" popular juggler. By Mel Taylor snow cAn ’ 1)’urim':'r .
