I read an advance copy through in two days at the cottage and am frustrated that it won‘t be out till October. it brought me to tears. Dear Barbara, DwLynneâ€"memmyoflwowomeninsearch olmomerlmd.islmmaloguebetweontwownenwhohavenever nm.ThoyshmdcomspondingaferarbamShulooldhadalenef printed in Resoive, a newsletter for infertility support groups. Barbara is in her late thirties, a San Francisco teacher giving up on fertility treatments and trying to adopt a child. Lynne Sipiora is a career woman whose biological clock is running out, along with her patience with medical aids to fertility. She and her husband move from Chicago to Milwaukee to St. Louis during the three years the book encompasses,. Two women struggling to meet their desire, nay need, to have children. Leaning on each other‘s empathy, feeding each other‘s courage in the face of heartbreaking setbacks. And their challenge is to secure something most of us take for granted. The option they finally setttle on is open adoption. This means a birth mother is located through an agency and agrees to give up her newborn to adoptive parents she has met and chosen. Barbara‘s new daughter arrives a year before Lynne‘s. And the letters walk a tightrope between sympathy for Lynne‘s delays and jealousy of Barbara‘s baby love. The emotional roller coaster as the birth mothers change their minds, and later a baby is born with a heart defect and dies the next day, left me dizzy. Through it all an amazing friendship is developing between Lynne and Barbara. Letters go back and forth at least weekly. Their mutual support is balanced by honesty and even anger at times. Their husbands remain background shadows but their growth into fatherhood is apparent: (from a letter to Lynne). In reaching and yearning for the dream (a baby) I (you too!) seem to forget the special reality I have: a husband who loves me very much and who â€" like yours â€" has made many changes and Revnnna YOUR MEMORIAL SHOULD BE ORDERED NOW SUPERIOR MEMORIALS 450 Dundas Street, Cambridge, Galt (Beside Galt Glass) 740â€"0190 Dear Barbara, Dear Lyn LARGE INDOOR SHOWROOMS For Summer Installation TRACKLESS Ladies & Mens Tailor & Alterations Al‘s Tailor Shop brings you over 25 years of experience in the Kâ€"W area, working with SAUDER‘S mens and ladies wear for 20 years. I am grateful that Barbara and Lynne have shared themseives so fully with each other, and with us as readers. The epistolary form is enjoying a comeback. (Last fall‘s bestseller, Griffin and Sabine will have a sequel this fall.) Perhaps letter writing as an art will also see a revival. The two women do use the phone at critical times but follow up with letters. A final quote from Barbara upon learning of the baby‘s heart defect. No sleep tonight. I keep thinking about you there, alone and angry 1 hate feeling so helpless, so useless. | wanted to say the right thing, to give you comfort, but as a wise and loving woman once wrote me: There are simply no words. | have cried for you, my insides are torn apart, my heart is broken and the tears still won‘t stop.
