"Once Over Lightly" is the right name for Sandy Baird‘s column. In his recent commentary on the proposed development of Waterloo‘s west side, he glazed over the wholeinuewithanuinghf.cttompport his diatribe against "kneeâ€"jerk naysayers" who oppose this development. His whole message was to poke fun at Waterloo citizens who don‘t agree with his implied thesis that growth for the sake of growth is the only way to like living in Waterloo. Environmentalists and naturalists are joined by many ordinary Waterloo citizens in their concern about the decisions made by the present elected officials to expand our city. Catch the Bouquet: A minister friend â€" he was called fairly recently to an area church â€" has some kind, kind words for Waterloo. Says he: "When I was in Toronto I got to Kitchener fairly often, but not to Waterloo. But that‘s not so any longer. We‘ve discovered Waterloo and we just love it. "It‘s really charming, so neat and relaxed. And lots of parking." Then this postcript: "Driving through downtown Kitchâ€" ener is depressing. I saw some drugâ€"dealing on a corner, likely soft stuff." He knows the drug scene, and it turns out he was probably right about the downtown Kitchener sales. A few days later a crackdown nabbed 45 people. Let‘s hopethattheguiltygetmmthanaulaponthe | Eks NOpe mat: ‘J gek Nan C‘mon Chronicle and of farm/market I‘m fresh back from another trip south. This is to report that it‘s merely late. Farther south, the trees are in leaf and the flowers in bloom. The sun was out every day and the sky was a blinding blue. How come it wasn‘t returned to the main municipal cashbox back in 19847 In Kitchener municipal circles, is $9,985 considered chump change? How many such treasure troves are there? It seems peculiar. But then lots of things about Parks and Rec are. Of late there‘s been some bizarre talk of a Kitchener municipal lottery to fund such things as pools and rinks. Sometimes you get the feeling Parks and Rec is running the city, that all the other departments are incidental. It‘s no wonder so many taxpayers are moneyâ€"mad.
