146â€"4120 It‘s so confusing that you‘ll have to take a lawyer with you on your next shopping trip. This country is supposed to be a democracy and we are proud of our soâ€"called freedom. But we have so many rules about shopping â€" not on a Sunday, except in December, not the day after Christmas unless you are fined, but maybe you won‘t be, it‘s OK if it‘s a tourist area. This originated in the U.S. when the Drug Enforcement Agency decided to follow the money trail of drug deals rather than the criminals. It proved very successful. Not only did they get the money but, the top ringleaders too. Just imagine it â€" Sam Spa:ie‘, Q.A. and Private Eye. Ontario Treasurer Floyd Laughren is insisting that Sunday shopping should be treated separately from Boxing Day shopping. Who is this guy kidding? Shopping is shopping â€" ask any woman. When I think of all the wasted energy and bureaucracy regarding rules for shopping, I can‘t blame Canadians for all the crossâ€"border shopping. Former Prime Minister Trudeau managed to get the governâ€" ment out of the bedrooms of the nation, and now we need a strong leader to get the government (Provincial this time) out of the stores. If Humphrey Bogart was making Sam Spade movies today, Sam would probably be an accountant. Yes, there are accountâ€" ants out there who are shedding that dull boring image that has long been associated with accountants. They‘re called forensic and investigative accountants. There are about 200 CA‘s in Canada practicing this glamorous side of accounting. What do they do? Well, they do undercover work for fraud and are used in criminal investigations to determine where the money went. After a year of watching revolutions around the world, why does it take Canadians so long .t.o‘ plan a revolt? L Recent news about bad guy Manuel Noriega reveals an interesting side to the man. Apparently Noriega‘s lawyers report that he cooperated with the U.S. drug intelligence programs in 1983â€"1984. His lawyers have asked for a delay in his trial and expect this information to help his defense. Who‘s side was this guy on?‘I wonder who pays his legai bills? *# o% Farewell to Soviet Mikhail Gorbachev, who resigned on Christmas Day. Gorbachev initiated democratic reforms in the U.S.S.R. and got caught up in the whirlwind of change. It will be interesting to see what his next career will be. We haven‘t seen the last of Gorbachev. His father opened the store back in 1967 in what was an Lâ€" shape area of the first floor consisting of about 400 square feet. Carmine recalls that their livingroom was also on the main floor, but over time expansion was necessary and the living It‘s also an emotional move for Carmine â€" other than the first six months of his life, he has always lived and worked out of the Bridgeport Road home/store. He admits the move is going to be a big one and it‘s going to be tough on his parents, Vincenzo and Rita who live above the store. Although retired from the busiâ€" ness, his father still wanders through the store checking things out. In Carmine‘s heart, his faâ€" ther will always be the boss. ; Pete Cudhea Chronicle Staff For those who always wanted to go to Italy, but never had the chance, The Italian Canadian Food Store at 25 Bridgeport Road can offer you a sample of its heritage. However, come this March, a little bit of Italy will be lost from the Waterloo community when the store relocates at 740 Belâ€" mont St. in Kitchener in a former brewer‘s retail outlet. And while the move was Waterloo‘s loss, it was a move of neccessity for Carmine Caccioppoli, the 25â€" yearâ€"old store owner. Italian Canadian Food Store bids arrivaderci to Waterloo Carmine and Tony Caccioppoli, owners of Vincenzo‘s Pasta, make 30 flavors of pasta .« , Some Features on EX and EXR Accord ‘"We know where we‘re from and why people like coming to us. Standing in one location of the store, one can smell the garlic; while in another olives dominate the air. None of the meat or cheese is pre cut. According to Carmine, people can come in and get what they want, not what‘s available. It‘s a part of the heriâ€" tage he hopes to continue at the new location. "People have told us, ‘When you move, make sure you take the smells with you‘,"said Cacciop: poli. Once inside the store, it‘s alâ€" most a scene out of a Norman Rockwell picture. Cheeses hangâ€" ing on the wall, bins of beans, walls lined with canned and bottled peppers and pickles, barâ€" rels of olives, boxes of garlic, racks of herb and flat breads, and the list goes on. Yet, even more dominating than the sights are the aromas. room is now part of the store, giving it a total of 800 square feet. Starting off with mostly an Italian clientele and word of mouth advertising, their customâ€" ers would come from as far as Guelph and Cambridge to buy original Italian foods. But that has changed during the past five years, and Carmine estimates that today 90 per cent of his customers are either non Italian or second generation Italian. Dayâ€"Time _ Running Lights The move is going to be a big one, emotional and neccessary But in the spring Carmine and his family will be welcoming customers to their new store with a cheerful buon giorno. The one thing he won‘t miss is the store‘s parking lot. Located behind the house, it has space for about eight cars, but on a busy Saturday morning, somehow 12 cars can find parking space. Car mine isn‘t sure how they do it. but in his years of working at the store, there has never been an accident that he can recall ‘"My sister Lucy worked here for 15 years. She‘d see parents come in with their children, and now they‘ve grown and come in with their families." Carmine is planning to have a muralâ€"sized photo taken of the back area of his store and he will hang it, along with their old original sign, along a wall in their new store. The changes, other than the location, will be minimal at first. Other than expanding the variety of cheeses â€" over 125 varieties â€" and meats, his main concern is to establish his new business in a new locaâ€" tion, while trying to retain his old customers, some who have been coming to the store since they were children. We‘re going to try to retain the flavor and preserve the atmo sphere in our new location." Our incredible 48â€"month lease with nothing down â€" no security deposit.
