New mom Piper, an 18â€"monthâ€"old Cairn Terrier, Hancock is so delighted with the puppies that she has already claimed one for herself and has named it Morton. She, too, plans to bring Morton to work with her. Zieske says another of the ruppie- has been spoken for, and she‘s sure she‘ll have no problem finding a home for the third. "If not, we‘ll just have three dogs coming to work Wlfil us every day," she said. "I don‘t think anybody will mind." i db s Olalal dn l uonl ditaiaintniis t : 1 Last month, Zieske and the residents at Parkwood Manor got a bit of surprise when they realized that sweet Piper had been out seeking the kind of love and attention that only members of her own species can provide. They realized Piper was pregnant just two weeks before she gave birth to a litter of three male puppies on Dec. 5. "She just went out for a walk one day, and, well, you know," Zieske laughed. "It was a surprise for us, but everyone was thrilled." The puppies are four weeks old now, and last Friday was the first day Zieske took them to Parkwood to visit with the residents. Carole Hancock, a nurse at the seniors‘ home, tells of the effect the puppies have had on some of the residents. We have one patient who suffers from Alzheimâ€" er‘s disease, and we haven‘t had any reaction from her in months," Hancock said. "When we showed her the puppies, she smiled. It‘s the first sign of emotion we‘ve seen from her in over a month." Piper has become a good friend to many of the residents. She gets lots of extra love and attention, and the residents are provided with the affection that accompanies pet ownership â€" a relationship nc;t always fsa:iblg in an i_nstitutéonal setting.
