WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23. 1W1 It's rather pathetic and should be heard as a cry for help, for thetruthisthatitisexpreesingnothingmorethanadeep feeling of personal inadequacy, giving rise to a sense of " disapproval. To bolster their lack of selfesteem they make a show of independence which turns people away from them which, in turn brings on the phony derusnt response of "Who needs them anyway?" The fact is that we cannot get along without others - not for long at least. In failing to realize the fact that they have to deal with the facts of human nature just as realistically as they deal wrth the facts about anything else, they are being childish and mmature. which can usually be traced to their upbringing. However, blaming the parents will solve nothing; findiag the reasons for the irrational behavtour will. Fhrst, they must realize that they are the source of their own troubles. for it is their feelings of selMisapproval of dislike on the nude that show up as sumlar feelings toward others on the outsuie And as people generally will react In kind to the way others act toward them, a Vit‘ious cycle is set up, with the :nstigator doomed to evernnereasutg isolation. I'm not going to be a phony People can take me or leave me, just as I am, and I don't give a hoot whether they like me or not!" Although the unit is cluttered and needs a good paint job, to some of the 75 nurses on the fifth floor of the Green Street location, it's homey - but to those in charge, improvement is needed. So, Seventh Heaven is just around the corner for this overused Dialysis Unit, when they move to the seventh floor of the K-W Hospital next April. The move and expansion is going to be a costly venture - $1.3 million - but it will allow the unit to treat the evtinereaaiag number of patients. Back in 1976 this unit served just tour patients, but between 1980 and 1990, treatments " the Dialysis Unit increased by 350 per cent without any signifieiant expansion of the facilities. Diabetes, a major cause of kidney failure, is increasing at an alarming rate of six per cent per year. The bottom line is that they're running out of space while many patients are running out of time. "If you need dialysis and don't get it, you die, So we don't have an option but to treat, and that gets really tough," said Dawn Evans, program manager for the Dialysis Unit. She sees the expansion as a step in the right direction. The unit itself has increased by three more stations giving the unit a total of 16, but it's still within the same floor space slotted to the unit back in 1976. Donations have also come from area service clubs, and special functions such as Popcorn Tuesdays, which raised more than $30,000 for the new wing. Once they locate on the seventh floor of the main building, the changes will have many benerita. They already have the CAPD and the Peritoneal Dialysis program in operation on one wing on floor seven. while in another wing will eventually be just for hemodialrits. It will be a large open area where they have four rooms to dialysise the morecritical patients. The other 12 pftients will be set up in a horseshoe area around _ "__ _' ... _r ... All the Mule rooms with a patient here and a patient there are very cluttered. It's certainly not very pretty It's very removed from the main building and when we have a crisis over here we're a long way from help. It you come through the tunnel you'd appreciate how far we have to with a stretcher when someone is arresting. 'tlt it happens "We have their blood outside of their body and we remove fluid and impurities and sometimes they go into cardiac arrest, or they become critically ill and we have to get them back into ICU - Intensive Care Unit - which is a long bumpy ride on a stetcher." The unit has three types of programs. hemodialysis, with 80patienta coming three times a week; about I? peritoneal dialysis patients who come twice a week for 24 hours; then there's the CAPD - Continous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis.
