And there aren‘t many people who would give up an afternoon to pick up a complete stranger from the airport. Mcgee is a music For Mcgee, every experience brings an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Several years ago, Megee sat on the board of the Friendship Group, an orgaâ€" nization set up to match volunteer visitors with people who need extra support, and nine years later, she still visits a blind diabetic on a regular basis. Mecgee‘s interests reach far beyond her love of music. When she isn‘t making performers feel just a little more at home and when she isnt‘collecting tickets for Chamber concerts, she volunteers with the Grand Valley Trails Association. She helps with registration, she leads occasional hikes, she is the area contact, and Lois Mcgee prefers to stay behind the scenes when she volunteers her time, but for her, every new experience offers another chance to meet a new friend. lover and as part of her support for the Kâ€"W Chamber Music Society, she brings visiting artists to the city. Mcgee doesn‘t view the drive to Toronto as a chore either â€" she sees it as yet another chance to make a new friend. "I think it just must be the most dreary part of their (the performers‘) lives, coming into a strange city, especially if they are from out of the country and then nobody there to meet them," she says. And her resume is about as checkered as her volunteer time. Mcgee has worked with the Children‘s Aid as a social worker. she was a kindergarten teacher, and became a nurse when she was in her forties. Mcgee laughs at how she considered herself the grandmother of her nursing class. Even today she is considered the neighbohood nurse â€" the first person anyone calls with a medical problem. But there‘s more to Mcgee‘s neverending quest to help new people and experience new things. She served on the steering committee of the Seniors Adult Bark Lake Experience â€" an organization which hosts an extended weekend camp for seniors â€" for two years But she decided to move on because Megee believes by stepping aside, she can maintain a proper perspective and give others the oppor tunity to help. "A lot of people you just know are calling because they‘ve reached a point in life where they want to do something different with themselves, they want to meet new friends. 1 find a lot of lovely friendships forming in the Grand Valley Trails." she even maintains a section of the club trail. Like everything she participates in, Megee truly enjoys her work with the association yet feels that many of the inquiries she fields are individuals who are lonely and in need of support.
