With the Canada Post strike there has been violence, disruption in the life of Canadians waiting for important mail such as pension cheques, and the daily struggle of small businesses who rely T the mail to receive orders and payments. u... .- _- ._.-. ......, Canada Post, in the near future, will not be the Canada Post we know today. Electronic mail will dominate, and the number of employees required will be fewer and will require technical backgrounds. If the union really cared about the employees, they should be concentrating efforts on retraining, not just increasing salaries for jobs that will dis‘agpear. L J Ut While all this has been going on, the average Canradian has been bombarded by full page ads in newspapers, by the Foetal Workers Union and Canada Post, each telling their side of the story. What about the average Canadian', aide of the story - after all, that is who ultimately pays for the advertising, the strike, the damage done by the strikers, and any wage settlements. Canada Post is a government agency, They produce revenues, and recently were profitable. But, if they lose money, and they did for many years, it's you and me - taxpayers - who foot the bill. Well, some Canadians are speaking out. Letters to the editors of newspapers clearly show little support for the postal workers. Can you blame them? - Canadians have had a rough time during the recession, Approximately 350,000 jobs have been lost across Canada. Most of these jobs are not coming back. Unemployment figures are about 10%. That's one out of every 10 employable Canadians who are out of work. Many companies have cut or frozen salaries, reduced hours of their employees, and laid off other employees. These are tough times for. responsible people. V If you are unemployed, or haven't had a salary increase in a few years, you can't sympathize with a union who has been offered a 9.3% wage increase, effective August 1, 1991. Sure there is the argument that everyone wants to keep up with inflation, but keep in mind that high wage settlements contribute to inflation. Inflation is now about 6%, and it appears to be under control. Giving in to one union's demands will just pave the way for others to follow, and we car?) afford it, Now, let's look at Canada at Canada Post objectively. That's not necessary anymore - the money can be deposited directly to your bank account - that also saves you the trouble of making deposits. Fire the Postal workers and hire new ones form the ranks of the unemployed, This should take a day or two. But this time no union. Oh, don't worry, it's still round, but Yoshi, Mike Pawson and John Hubman believe they have created a device that can make a bicycle go faster when attached to the wheel(s) y, racing bicycle. Yoshi has a folder with letters and endorsements of the Pawsh disc from these world-class athletes. And, of course, just how much faster can a cylist expect to go with these Pawsh disc? According to Yoshi, a highly competitive cyclist can take off about one to two seconds per kilometre. In a standard 40km race, that's be. tween one to two minutes. The faster the cyclist, the greater the time improvement.
