"I am a strong advocate for parent involvement," says Haskell. "The best way to get involved in your child‘s education is by volunteering and becoming an active participant." â€" Gore agrees that volunteer involvement will put the parent in a much better position when it comes to developing a rapport with teachers. "Get involved with a bake sale or reading for another kid, or just taking your turn watering the school rink, but just generally make yourself visible at the school," he says. "Then you‘re on a much "Parents can do a lot to help their kids at home," adds Patti Haskell, superintendent of human and educational resources for the Waterloo County Board of Education. "Positive role modelling and encouragement give the child the impression that learning can be a rewarding experience." Gore outlines a number of important points in involving parents in their child‘s education, startâ€" ing right from the beginning of the school year. "The second day of school, I call the teacher to see if there‘s anything I can do to help or assist," says Gore. "Nine out of ten teachers appreciate a call like that, and that impression is going to set the tone for the rest of the school year." Parents/teachers must work together Gore feels that attitude is the key to making any learning experience a valuable team effort on the part of families and educators alike. "‘Make it a point to drop by and pick up your child at least once and introduce yourself, and make a special effort to make a social visit to get to know the principal." If the abiding impression left by all of these considerations is that parents should feel free to explore that partnership in every way, then a child‘s education becomes the responsibility of the entire community working in concert to the best advantage of the pupil. m Mog Ece es When it does come time to attend parent/teacher night, Gore says it is wise to remember that "parents are going to school to interview the teacher and not be interviewed." Parents and teachers can go far in helping each other, and the sooner that relationship is developed and nurtured the better. "I think often the parents think they just have to leave their kids in this controlled environment," says Haskell. "Really the parent/teacher relationâ€" ship is a partnership." When the teacher asks if you have any concerns, it‘s a good idea to say "no." That leaves it up to the teachers to outline their own concerns, whereas expressing concern will just encourage the teacher to ask all the questions and "the next thing you know, they‘re interviewing the parent."
