Patti Haskell, superintendent of human and educational resources for the Waterloo County Board of Education, agrees there are different reasons people get into teaching, whether vocationâ€" al or occupational, but points out that both motives can produce competent instructors. What makes a good teacher? And what makes learning an enjoyable and enlightening experience, preparing us for the ups and downs that life has to offer? "If you have a person whose vocation is to teach, that will be the one willing to go that extra distance," says Gore. "I always look for the natural teacher first." Our lives are shaped by experience and molded by our perceptions and appreciation of that daily experience. And, while our parents bring their skills to bear in showing us the means to meet life head on, much of the responsibility for investing us with the capacity to interpret our perceptions and to prepare us for the adventure of life is in the hands of a dedicated body of professionals who probably spend more of our waking hours with us than our parents do. . _ _ Everybody has had a favorite teacher whose enthusiasm and willingness to go that extra mile to enhance our understanding has left a lasting impression on our lives. Fred Gore, principal of St. Jude‘s School in Waterloo, believes that there are two kinds of teachers. There is the person who was born to teach, for whom teaching is a vocation, and there is the person who has come to the profession through hard wor:lf and‘study to make teaching their occupation. 575 Kumpt Dr. (corner of Northfield & Hwy. 86) Waterloo (519) 884â€"6400 Tues. & Wed. 10:30â€"5:30; Thurs. & Fri. 10:30â€"8; Sat. 10â€"4 What makes a good teacher? environmentAt P ropucts without tsE _ Packacine STACKA SHELE ’ yenerat enerations 19.95 Offer Expires Sept. 28/91 All ethical and professional considerations aside though, in the long run, the teacher who goes furthest towards meeting the criteria for a good teacher is the one who best works with the child and parent alike in developing a lifelong commitment to engquiry and the thirst for knowledge. "It all boils down to people skills," says Gore. "A good teacher doesn‘t necessarily mean someone who keeps a good daybook or a neat, organized and very structured classroom. A good teacher is the person who knows that their authority is earned from the students on a daily basis, a person who knows that students are people and have rights too." "A good teacher still has to have that intrinsic love of the profession and should be highly motiâ€" vated and organized so they can put it all in context," says Haskell. In addition to that organization and motivation, she also feels a good teacher has to be flexible, empathetic and, perhaps most important of all, possess a good sense of humor. ©"You can be born to teach, but there are ways to enhance those skills," Haskel] says. "I like to think that the vast majority of teachers are ones who have chogen thg profession for all the right reasons." "Over the past 20 years, there have been more occupational teachers than vocational teachers," says Gore. "It‘s a tough job, but 25 years ago people didn‘t go into teaching because it paid well. It was a hi§hly respected occupation." Today, téachiné is a much betterâ€"paid profession, and Gore feels that not as many people are going into teaching because it‘s their vocation. 435 Conestoga Rd., Waterloo JOSSLIN INSURANCE BROKE R S@hleii The kids are going back to school next week, many of them on b::'ycles.
