PAGE B6 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1991 Superstition Siouxsie And The Banshees MCA Here‘s proof you can judge an album by its cover Siouxsie Sioux, the erstwhile punk priestess who launched a generation of big black hairdos, looks atypically elegant in a long gown and a hairstyle which a young Barbara Stanwyck would have been fond of And the transformation doesn‘t end here. Siouxsie turns out to be something of a romantic after all Superstition is the closest she has come to making a pure pop record. Practically gone are the haunting Gothic overtones, penchant for the macaâ€" breand Eastern mysticism. The result is music which is less enchanting, but still far enough removed from the mainstream to be interesting. Slave To The Grind Skid Row Atlantic WEA Superstition reveals the romantic side of Siouxsie These New Jersey raunch ‘n‘ rollers are supâ€" posedly ready to assume the hardâ€"rock crown should Guns N Roses fall from grace. in the event Skid Row decide to fight for the title, they certainly nave the ammunition: an ersatz A«| Rose in singer Sebastian Bach, an arsenal of pulverizing riffs that seldom abate, and oodles of attitude, something teens want lots of when spending their hardâ€"rock doilar. Slave To The Grind probably will move Skid Row a step closer to the top. But Guns ‘N‘ Roses they re not, at least not yet. Wielding sledgeâ€"hamâ€" mer guitars with nary a catchy hook or melody isn‘t enough. These boys are slaves to the grind indeed. Last year‘s Seven Turns, a solid effort which marked the band‘s 20th year together, was nevertheless a painful reminder that the glory days couldn‘t be revisited. With Shades Of Two Worlds, the Allmans merely touch on the past rather than rely on it. There‘s a renewed vigor, thanks in part to Warren Hayes‘ guitar and Gregg Aliman‘s voice, which burns with that oldtime passion. Above all, Shades Of Two Worlds betrays a sense of adventure. What a surprise to hear the band mixing in jazz and traditional blues with its usual southern bluesâ€"rock stew De La Soul is Dead De La Soul Not dead, actually, just not quite as full of life. The trio which invented psychedelic rap (3 Feet High And Rising) â€" and at the same time breathed life into a genre badly in need of some â€" has dropped the flowerâ€"power stance and decided to get serious. Maybe too serious. De La Soul is Dead, while certainly more alive than much of the competition, lacks the innovative sampling and playtuilness of its predecessor. Let‘s give them the benefit of the doubt, however. 3 Feet And Rising was an almost impossible act to follow PotyGram Ross MacDonald is a Cambridge freelance writer Communications (Waterloo Printing) "We can create our swimming program for children... it‘s an excellent allâ€"round facility."
