PAGE EZ2 â€" ENTERTAINMENT ZONE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 1991 KWLT presents ‘night Mother 3Â¥ By Mel Taylor The Kâ€"W Little Theatre is making a boid foray into the delicate subject of suicide with Marsha Norâ€" man‘s Pulitzer Prize winning drama, ‘night Mother, opening at the company‘s ‘Studio‘‘ theatre August The play deals in an uncompromising fashion with widow Theima Cates (played by Theatre Laurier graduate M. Ruth Ann Peters) and her divorced daughter Jessie (Julia O‘Hallarn). One evening, Jessie, overweight, epileptic, and depressed over her divorce and a son who has turned out badly, announces to her mother her intention to commit suicide The play unfolds as an existential debate on the question of suicide, intended to encourage discusâ€" sion of a subject which is commonly swept under the carpet, especially by victims‘ families, who are essentially the ultimate victims of such a tragic act. Director Jennifer Epps submitted her proposal to the Kâ€"W Little Theatre after they invited student directors to work in the company‘s studio space on Princess Street. Epps was introduced to the work about four years ago when she saw the film, starring Sissy Spacek and Ann Bancroft. it had a profound effect upon Epps personally since her grandmother committed suicide before she was born, and she has spent a lifetime watching her mother deal with the afterâ€" shock I‘ve had a suicide in my family, and | also telt like | could relate to both characters. Theatregoers are advised to arrive early due to limited seating capacity. "A lot of people, especially suicide survivors, would rather people didn‘t talk about suicide, because they‘re afraid it might give people ideas,"" says Epps. ‘‘The play actually helped me a great deal,"‘ she says. ‘‘Somehow, even though there‘s one characâ€" ter who is very depressed, it is full of hope." The space for this production is very intimate, bringing a small audience of only 50 practically into the characters‘ living room. Epps feels it is well suited to the play and will help involve the audience emotionally in the work. Epps says that frank and open discussion of suicide is essential to fostering awareness of an issue which too often people would rather not deal with. She has consulted with Al Evans, a psycholoâ€" gy professor at the University of Waterloo, about the impact the work might have on people, and has prepared a list of local support groups for inclusion in the program. She feels that turning a blind eye to such a pressing issue benefits no one in the long run. ‘‘The audience is very close to the actors. What I‘m hoping is that people will stay after the play to talk to the actors,‘‘ she says. â€" I was interested in pursuing. Hopefully it will promote discussion and make people think,"" says Epps. o Choix Under New Management Formerly the Sunâ€"Spot TAN WITHOUT SAND _ 1417â€"5563 * We will honour Sessions from THURSDAY, AUGUST 15th to SUNDAY, AUGUST 18th 1t Did You Know . .. 0 lphil i;o&ls &APoudoï¬vmto g'ndlu.
