His efforts to rebuke the past, however, never smack of change for the sake of it They don‘t always work either, which is the case with Mighty Like A Rose This is arguably Costelios most uneven effort. a work that s at once apathetic and emotionallyâ€"charged. aggressive and subdued. Everything he does, it seems, is designed to catch us off guard. He made a country album when we least expected it; changed mis name â€" temporarily, at least â€" to Declan MacManus (his given name); and even hooked up with Paul McCartney, an unlikely ally if there ever was one More than a decade on, Jackson proves he can still cut it as a relevant pop artist. Laughter And Lust, especially the first half, crackles with songs knee deep in catchy hooks and dashing rhythms. Jackson is in a playful mood for the most part and nis sardonic wit is especially poignant on Hit Single, a great shot at the sorry state of radio. His soulful, introspective side shows up on side two. There are moments, notably The Other Me and Trying To Cry. that recail the melancholy tone of Night And Day Such a mood swing isn‘t typical of Jackson â€" at least not on the same album â€"â€" but it‘s just the right mix for anyone who can‘t decide which side of Jackson they like best PAGE EZ8 â€" ENTERTAINMENT ZONE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 1991 Laughter And Lust Joe Jackson A&AM It s been easy to lose track of â€" and interest in â€" Jackson s career the last few years. | mean, the guy changes direction more often than David Bowie. His latest should have been called Hardly At Play. He gives the impression he‘d much rather be playing golf â€" his favorite pastime these days â€" and the News follow suit with the kind of homogenized, joinâ€"theâ€"dots rock that doesn t make headlines. With little new left to offer, Lewis should stick to guest appearances at celebriâ€" ty goif tournaments. Hard At Play is only for those safe in the knowledge that Lewis never lets them down Broken show he‘s still a master of melody and turning a phrase, but the nervous edge that‘s always been at the heart of his best songs is missing. Mighty Like A Rose is hardly a throwaway, however. Because even on an off day, Elvis Costello is still worthy of our time. Huey Lewis And The News Capitol Give the people what they want.
