Last month, Webb released its debut indie recording, Mileage. And it this is what the band can do without the benefit of heavy cor- porate backing, there's potential for a promising future. Vocalist/percussionist Deanna Knight and drummer Trevor Teed quickly became fixtures in Webb's entourage, and he com tinued with the album, but as a band, not a solo artist. Bassist Barry Walls and keyboardist Vince Rinaldo (formerly of Ray Lyell 8 the Storm) completed the lineup for the recording. "I started recording a solo (independent) album, and the band just sort of came out of it-. out of the people that were hired to play on the album," Webb says. After working for more than six years with various bands and as a solo performer, Webb last Janu- ary put together a band, aptly named Webb, and his career is right on track. "When I started out, I was a heavier rock guitar player - not really a singer or a writer. But when I started writing, I found I just couldn't write in that style very well, and I couldn't sing in that style very well," says the 23-year-old musician. “So I started getting into more acoustic music, and now it's kind of a combination of the two - there the acoustic thing but with a hard edge. I felt more comfortable with this type of music. I think I've really found my niche - that straight-up-the-rniddle kind of style." Down on the Water- front (which is in medium rotation on FM-96 and a few other sta. tions) was written after Webb got stranded one cold winter's night "I probably had written in the neighborhood of 100 songs of varying quality, and of those I picked to that really sort of hit the nail on the head," Webb says. “All of those songs were written in 1990, when I did a lot of travelling. The 'mileage' theme just sort of put it all in perspec- tive." The album reflects a simpler time, musically speaking, when classic rock was flourishing. Yet Webb (the person) brings to it, with all his 23 years, a contem- porary bent. Hence, it's not a nostalgia piece. says. Just over- hearing their conversations, and seeing the way they live - they go in with 50 cents and make two cups of coffee last all night - it struck me seeing that kind of street situation first hand, and I had to write about It." The album, recorded at West- wind Studios in Kitchener and Parrot Productions in Brantford, was released last month on CD and cassette, and is being scooped up by fans at live shows. Ironically, a cut from the album (while it was still in production) won the band first place honors in the FM-96 Radio (London) "On Track" talent contest, and $1,500 worth of recording time. in Toronto , . , , Recessmn -.. ‘ Fighter "3. 3mm G t ‘ if”: lu t " J., AUG. 6 & 7 with this ad m-ttnina-ri-tet. scum , 1rt.qPtr,t W- yePtyty1rt th The album is doing well, the band's two singles and respective videos are getting lots of airplay, and journalists haettttotptdttshing"GrrsttoryiMtoartd tttttWhatNopW'. thttHoakitttt, who IMtettutaehrNtttrtxtrrougtttdtttNstvifts wmmmmmmame "tttohhh-mt-tally.
