Ti.Tili2TrCrrrrrrrrrrTrrxErErTrr7 Before they disbanded in 1982, the British band Japan had begun to weave some fascinating textures and polyrhythms into its synth-rock sound. When the band members went their separate ways, each, notably singer David Sylvian and bassist Mick Kern. continued to explore the possibilities of integrating Eastern music with Japan's art-rock senSIbiiitiesr Ram Tree Crow reunites Sylvian and Kam with fellow Japan members Steve Jansen and Richard Barbrerl, The music, which leans heavily to the atmospheric soundscapes that have characterized Sylvuan's solo work, falls somewhere between the Rain Tree Crow Ram Tree Crow Virgin Springer out-wrote five of the songs with Frozen Ghost's Arnold Lanni. Given Springer's guitar prowess, this is a partnership akin to Tears For Fears penning tunes for Living Colour. Neither is much of a songwriter and it not for Springer's spirited playing, Love Crazy would be little more than garden-variety blues-rock. Springer obviously has some chops and with the right resources he may yet bring them to the studio. For the time being, however, what he hints at on Love Crazy is probably best appreciated live. Love Crazy Wild T And The . Warner Music Spittt A certain Toronto radio station, which lik deecnbe "sell as being mighty, would JI,',','," e believe Wild T (a.k.a. Tony Springer) is the second coming ot, Jimi Hendrix. Well maybe this station needs a mighty ttkip to clean out its ears. Springer IS no slouch. but Hendrix he isn't. First of all he's a victim of inesarne malaise that afflict, Jeff Healey- weak material and a pedestrian backup band. Secondly, Springer, in an effort to make a good firsi mpressoon. tries to cover too much musical ground and spreads himself thin t the process. Simple Mission offers nothing more than hackneyed ideas and music so homogenized it's sure to be a hit with the braindead guardians of the FM airwaves. Rewriting and rewriting Don't Forget Me ad nau- seum is Glass Tiger's modus operandi, and as much as they try to be different with a-typical moments as My Town, they'll always be more purr than growl. If only Glass Tiger's approach to pop music were a simple mission, Instead, this Newmarket band is forever reaching well beyond its scope. Still riding the popularity of their overblown and overplayed 1986 hit, Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone), Glass Tiger fashion themselves as something of a Canuck version of U2. ambient music of Brian Eno and minimalist New Age music for art school grads. Eno himself would describe Rain Tree Crow as "music to be over. heard, not heard." Nonetheless, this is one reunion that works on an artistic level. Sylvian‘s influence is the catalyst and it's hard not to be compelled by the exotic instrumentals and offbeat improvisation. Rain Tree Crow isn't for all tastes, but to pass it up would be to miss out on a fascinating listening experience, Simple Mission Glass Tiger Capitol Ross MacDonald is a Cambridge freelance writer, Wed., May 15th 7-8:30 pm.
