James Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell & Billy Branch The shared credentials of the principals is the main reason Harp Attack! works so well. Wells, Cotton and Bell all played with Muddy Waters and their individual styles owe much to the influence of the legendary Little Walter. Branch, though the lesser known of the four, has also been a mainstay of the Chicago blues scene for many years, and is a fine player in his own right. Together, they blew up a Windy City storm, raising the standard of electrified blues harp several notches in the process. You don‘t have to be a blues fan to appreciate Harp Attack! Since leaving X, one of L.A.‘s foremost punk bands in the ‘80s, singer Exene Cervenko has practicallly abandoned X‘s hardcore aproach to dabble in poetry and a variety of musical styles. Her first solo album, the wonderful Old Wives‘ Tales, caught everyone by surprise, but left some doubt as to whether Cervenko was sincere about her new direction. Obviously she is. Running Sacred carries on where Old Wives‘ Tales left off. It‘s a quite delightful, stylistically varied record that jumps from pop to folk to country. Cervenko even includes a cover of folksinger Hazel Dickens‘ Will Jesus Wash The Bloodstains, a sure sign that her early punk influences are Xâ€"tinct. The range of styles gives Cervenko the chance to showcase an excellent voice that has become far more expressive since she embarked on her solo journey.
