Robinson creates a chilling thriller in Caedmgn‘s Song As the author cleverly alternates the story of Martha and Kirsten, the reader is hardly aware that the two characters become one, combined to stalk the murderer and seek revenge. How successfully Robinson creates this fastâ€"paced thriller lies not exclusively with his storytelling skills. He, like D.H. Lawrence, who created Lady Chatterley in the book Lady Chatterly‘s Lover and became her through his pen,. creates the female persona so successfully it is difficult for the reader to remember that this book The stories that command full news coverage too often invoive vioient crimes against women, and stories dealing with mass murders create a ripple of fear that reaches women everywhere. his former style in The Hanging Valley, A Necessary End and A Dedicated Man, to write Caedmon‘s Song (Viking/Penguin, 247 p. $24.95) the story of a victim who survived the attack of a mass murderer. Whether or not the Montreal Massacre prompted Robinson to write this book we are not told, but with its release last fall, it is certainly a chilling reminder of the events that took place there a year earlier. Set in Britain, the story begins with a woman named Martha who has arrived by bus in the seaside town of Yorkshire. The next character introduced, Kirsten, is partying in her favorite pub with her college chums. As the night wears on, after dancing and drinking, she walks alone through a park to reach her dorm. Suddenly, out of nowhere, someone comes up behind her, clamps a rough hand over her mouth, speaks a few words and viciously attacks her. Later she wakes up, badly injured ‘Jack the Ripper style ‘ in a hospital bed. PAGE EZ6 â€" ENTERTAINMENT ZONE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1991 We‘re hittin‘ the streets Victoria St. N 271 Kmé St. W. The ability to write in the opposite gender escapes most all of our Canadian fiction authors, leaving them with book after book that attracts primarily a male or female reading audience. As the story progresses, Martha recovers as the only surviving victim in a string of murders commitâ€" ted by the same man. in Marthaâ€"Kirsten‘s unrelentâ€" ing search to find him, she undergoes hypnosis to recall the words he spoke. Slowly they return to her and are identified as the lines from a poem by the ancient seaside poet Caedmon, thus she is led to the seaside towns of Yorkshire to find the man with the rough hands smelling of fish. Eventually the driven Marthaâ€"Kirsten gets her man. How and where leads to a mad and frenzied search not for the timid or squeamishâ€"ofâ€"stomach. Robinson pasâ€" ses no moral judgement on the justice dealt by his character, nor does he attempt to dissect the mind of the killer, yet Caedmon‘s Song offers keen insights into the crime, justice and the law. An entertaining pageâ€"turner not soon forgotten. Peter Robinson was born in Britain and presently resides in Toronto."
